Baker College Named “Best for Vets”

November 14, 2013

FLINT, Mich. – The Baker College system has been ranked among the nation’s top 20 online/nontraditional schools in the annual Best for Vets college rankings by Military Times, a family of newsweeklies that provides independent information to service members and their families.

The designation includes Baker’s 12 campuses and three satellite locations across Michigan, including Baker College Online.

“As with all of the Best for Vets rankings, Best for Vets: Colleges is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that make an institution a good fit for military veterans,” said Amanda Miller, editor of Military Times EDGE.
A new emphasis was placed on academic rigor for this fourth year of rankings. Other determinants include tuition percentage covered by the G.I. Bill, availability of specific programs, service member enrollment and statistics commonly used to track student success and academic quality, such as student-faculty ratio and rates for student loan default, retention and graduation.

“This is another significant designation by veteran-focused media that acknowledges Baker College as a top choice for veterans or active service personnel,” said Shawn Mann, director of military education programs for Baker College.

Baker College offers more than 150 career programs ranging from certificates to graduate degrees. Each campus has a veteran certifying official. The main Military and Veteran Student Service Center/lounge is located on the Flint campus in the building for the Center for Graduate Studies.

Baker College received the highest ranking for staff support dedicated to veterans issues, the amount of time spent on veterans issues and the scope and frequency of military-related training for teachers and administrators. The college also grants academic credits for military training as recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE).

“Fellow students and faculty benefit from the unique perspectives of our military veterans,” Mann said. “These students bring maturity, diversity, leadership and life experiences to the classroom.”
