Our Services

The Early Learning Center (ELC) is affiliated with the Baker College Early Childhood Education (ECE) program. In the ELC, supervised by lead teachers and ECE instructors, our students observe children of different age groups, learn how children grow and develop, and how, as future teachers, they can best assist in this natural process.

Infant program - 6 weeks through crawling
Each infant has different schedules that reflect their personalities. It is the role of our infant caregivers to accept each infant’s uniqueness and provide a safe and stimulating environment in which to grow.

Wobbler program - crawling through about 18 months
The Wobbler Program is designed to provide ample opportunities for the children to use repetition to practice newly acquired skills and to experience feelings of autonomy and success.

Toddler program - 18 months through 33 months
This program includes two groups: younger toddler and older toddler. Children acquire important self-help skills during these years, including personal care such as toileting, feeding, and dressing. To support and enhance each child’s developmental progress, teachers provide a variety of activities with many choices.

Preschool program - 33 months to 4 years
Teachers provide many opportunities for children to play independently or with one or two other children, and help children to recognize their developing independence. Children are invited into the program regardless of toilet training capabilities.

Older preschool/Michigan School Readiness Program/Kindergarten - 4 years and older
For children who have met the objectives of the Younger Preschool Program and are 4 years of age or older, teachers offer more experiences that prepare the child for a kindergarten environment.

The Michigan School Readiness Program (MSRP) is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

This free preschool experience is designed for 4 year old children with two pre-determined risk factors.

The center also provides care for Kindergarteners on the flip side of their public school assignment.

School-Age Child Care (SACC) Program/Summer Camp - Before and After School
SACC is from 6:00 am to 8:00 am and 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and during days off from public school. In summer, these children participate in Summer Adventure Camp and go on field trips.

Parent Involvement

The ELC is committed to working closely with parents toward the welfare of the whole family. Parents are welcome to visit the center at any time—both prior to enrolling their child and during the child’s time at the center—and to take advantage of the many opportunities to participate in classroom activities and events. We also encourage parents to join the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), which provides an opportunity to be actively involved in their child's early childhood experiences. The PAC meets every other month to discuss day-to-day operations and plan events.

Student Organizations

Getting involved with activities outside of the classroom not only makes college more fun, it also helps you prepare for your career. Participation—whether it's in an intramural team, a study group, or a volunteer program—will build relationships, develop new skills and experiences, and improve your ability to plan and manage your time.

Consider joining one of the student organizations here on the Owosso campus.
