Sign language interpreters provide the vital communication link between people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and those who can hear. When you study American Sign Language (ASL) at Baker, you not only learn how to translate words, but also develop knowledge of how to convey concepts and ideas clearly.

Our ASL instructors, who are deaf or hard-of-hearing themselves, help you develop your fluency in ASL. Through extensive practice, internships, and specialized interpreting classes, taught by instructors who work as Interpreters, you develop your ability to interpret by applying your concentration, memory, and listening skills. When you graduate and successfully complete the state of Michigan certification examination, you will be ready to work in schools and service centers for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, or as an independent Interpreter.
