Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomy Technician

As a Phlebotomy Technician, you focus exclusively on blood collection. Because you work directly with people of all ages to prepare them for drawing blood — a procedure which may upset some patients — your courtesy and ability to inspire confidence are just as important as your technical skills and accuracy.

You estimate how much blood is required for the lab tests the doctor has ordered, assemble all necessary equipment, and obtain and store specimens. You also work with lab personnel to manage, arrange, and transport the specimens you collect to a testing lab. Your skill and accuracy is essential not only to the extended medical team, but also the health of the patient. Every time you draw blood or send out a sample, you are creating the patient’s blood history and lifetime health profile.

Your program at Baker will include both classroom study and supervised clinical experience. Upon graduation, you will have the training you need to work effectively with patients and be eligible to sit for one of the national Phlebotomy Technician certification exams.
