Malcolm Baldrige NQA

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) provides a more robust and complete model for strategic quality management than do other models. It more fully aligns the organization’s strategy, leadership practices and people than does ISO 9001:2000. It also requires a deeper understanding of customer needs and expectations, and places great value on business results. As such, it represents a higher level of achievement in strategic quality management. This is to be expected, as ISO 9001 is an international standard that sets minimum requirements for the assurance of quality, while the MBNQA is a business excellence model.

The weakness of the MBNQA is that it does not necessarily put in place the framework for control of the myriad of internal processes that must be performed correctly in order to achieve its high goals. The model is strong on concepts, and weaker on implementation in the areas of day-to-day process management. If strategic quality management is the goal, then the Baldrige model provides the framework, and the ISO 9001:2000 standard is the tool. Adoption of the MBNQA model does not require that an organization apply for the award (a somewhat expensive proposition). It does require, however, that the organization be willing to put forth the substantial time and effort needed to modify systems and policies to reflect the strategic concepts reflected in the model. Extensive research has shown, however, that with a few exceptions, companies that have adopted a Baldrige model framework have significantly outperformed their competitive rivals.
