Team Building
Most of us, at one time or another, have been part of a great “team” – a group of people who developed a synergy that allowed them to achieve extraordinary results. This can happen by chance, but more often, it is the result of skilled leadership and competent team facilitation.
Characteristics of High-Performing Teams
- A clear purpose
- Commitment to working toward common solutions
- Increased productivity
- High-quality decisions
- Open communication
- Growth opportunities for individuals and the team as a whole
- Trust among team members
- Limited organizational politics
- Pleasure and satisfaction among team members
- An energized climate
In contrast, low performing teams exhibit low levels of motivation,
a general lack of cohesiveness, breakdowns
in relationships, low productivity, poor or absent decision making,
and lack of common purpose.
Team building can be particularly important when:
- A team is new
- There is a need to change direction or refocus
- Conflicts arise within the team
- Team productivity drops or is at a standstill
Teambuilding Retreats
Teambuilding retreats provide an opportunity
for reflection and development that can refresh
and reenergize intact teams. They provide
an opportunity for team members to step back
and spend time reviewing, planning, and agreeing
on issues central to the team’s success.
The teambuilding retreat can also be an opportunity
to celebrate successes, prepare for the next
initiative, and build the collective capability
of the team.
Baker College consultants provide a variety
of teambuilding retreats depending on the
team’s goals and needs. The focus can
be on skill development, creating shared
vision, building understanding and appreciation
of team member differences, improving team
processes, creating a project plan, clarifying
the team charter, analyzing current processes,
improving intra-team communication, launching
a new team, or relationship-building among
team members.
Team Facilitation
Occasionally teams get “stuck” and are unable to move forward due to internal problems or lack of skilled leadership. In these cases, an outside facilitator can often provide needed structure and momentum to generate creativity and enthusiasm within the group. The Baker College consultants are skilled at helping new teams form and helping poorly functioning teams get back on track. With a focus on skill building, we work with teams to clarify goals, develop project plans and timelines, clarify team member roles, assign accountabilities, learn group problem solving techniques, build consensus, and establish expectations for team member behavior.
