Physical Therapist Assistant

Mission

Our mission for the Physical Therapist Assistant Program is to graduate students who have obtained the knowledge and skills to become employed as licensed physical therapist assistants and become contributing members of the physical therapy profession and health care team in diverse settings.

Philosophy

The faculty and administrators of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program believe that technical, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills are important components of a quality educational experience. In addition, teamwork, ethics, and problem-solving skills are emphasized throughout the educational experience to ensure graduation of competent physical therapist assistants.

Goal Statement

The goal of this program is to provide students with appropriate didactic and clinical experience leading to successful licensure and entry-level employment in the profession of physical therapy.

Customer Satisfaction Policy

Baker College is an institution focused on customer satisfaction. To that end, any concerns or complaints regarding the Physical Therapist Assistant Program can be sent to the attention of the director of the program on the appropriate campus. The director will investigate the complaint, consult with all parties involved, and provide a response as soon as all information has been evaluated. The program director will inform the Dean of Health Sciences of the complaint, investigation, and what actions have been taken.

If resolution cannot be reached at the level of the program director, the problem will follow the chain of command beginning with the Dean of Health Sciences, followed by the Chief Academic Officer/Vice President of Academics of the campus, the President of the campus, and finally the President of the Baker College System.

Decisions made by: Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE)
    EFFECTIVE DATE: 11-9-2011
Program Director receipt of decision 12-6-2011
What is the programs Accreditation Status?
    Status: PROBATIONARY ACCREDITATION
Action Taken: Continue Accreditation and Place program on probation

Why is the program on probation?
Reason for Decision made by CAPTE:

    1. Inability of the program to demonstrate compliance with Evaluative Criterion 4.1.7: Performance of program graduates
    2. Inability to document compliance with Commission requirements in this program performance area, which is 80% ultimate pass rate for the three most recent graduating cohorts. Despite reported and anticipated gain in the performance of graduates the average remains below the 80% threshold.
    3. 2008 to 2010 the average pass rate of first time test takers was 72.46% improving from 69.75% from 2007 to 2009

What options does the program have to respond? The decision to place the program on probation may not be appealed. The program will file a Compliance Report due March 1, 2012 that addresses the issues identified by the Commission. The Commission will review the Compliance Report at its April 27- May 2, 2012 meeting. Once the report is reviewed the Commission may

    • Remove probation if the report satisfies the Commission's concerns
    • Continue probation if the report satisfies some but not all of the Commission's concerns, or
    • Withdrawal accreditation if the report does not satisfy the Commission's concerns and the Commission believes that the program is not making good faith effort to do so.

What will be the next activity for the PTA program officials? A Compliance Report will be completed and submitted by March 1, 2012 related to the issues identified by CAPTE. The program is advised to heed the following notices:

      • Notification of current and prospective students
      • A contingency plan for existing students if accreditation is withdrawn
      • Public notice of reasons for probation
      • Two year limitation on being out of compliance
      • Accurate public disclosure of this decision by the institution
