Helpdesk FAQs
To learn about the role of the Helpdesk, please visit the About the Helpdesk section.
May I obtain my e-mail from home?Yes, you can access Baker Webmail by visiting the following Web site: https://email.baker.edu. You may also visit the Faculty/Staff - Using Baker Webmail or the Student - Using Baker Webmail sections.
I live far from any campus. How can I do my class research from home?Check out the Library Resources page on the Baker College Web page. You'll find helpful information and links there, including access to the ProQuest article search database.
I heard I could access the software on Baker College computers via the Internet; is that true? This is not true. The PCs at Baker College are not set up as servers; therefore, the software on them is local, and can only be used on the individual machines.
Can I create a personal Web page at Baker College?Faculty/Staff can set up a personal Web page by visiting the Faculty Web Site. At this time, there is no provision made for student Web pages on Baker's Web site.
I'm a C programming student, but when I log into Baker, my files are not in my directory; where are they?Chances are you're logging into the Hercules server; you need to log in to the Crux server (this is where your C programming home directory is, as well as the C compiler). Your instructor can give you specific instructions for logging into Crux from home.
I'm using a software package (not online software) that my instructor requires me to use for class; where should I go for help if I have difficulties with the software? The first place you should go for information is your instructor, who should be familiar with the workings of software he or she is requiring. You should not call the Helpdesk about software that is specific for your class (except for software for online classes). Although we make every effort to understand the technical aspects of software and installation, the Helpdesk personnel cannot learn the details and user issues of every software package that instructors require for their classes each term.
Does Baker College sell Computers? No. We only provide support for Baker-owned computers or those connecting to Baker College Web sites or networks from a home computer. However, students and faculty/staff are eligible to purchase computer equipment directly from CDW·G, Apple, and Dell at a significant discount.
