SEC Decision: Winter 2012
Facility needs for this program.
This program, like other networking/internetworking programs will make use of a computer networking lab. Existing facilities can be used pending availability on a campus-by-campus basis. Some campuses may be at maximum capacity of existing networking and computer lab facilities and an additional room would be needed. In those cases, campuses should expect to pay around $45,000 for the computer equipment in addition to the program-specific capital items detailed under question 3.
Are there any enrollment constraints based on required facilities?
None other than the typical class size limit due to use of a computer lab.
Anticipated capital expenditures for equipment (list equipment and costs including technology and software needs)
Dell R710 Rackmount Servers (3) 10800
64MB Memory Expansion Kits (6) 6120
Netlab PE Software and Appliance 19995
Shipping Costs 50
Cisco 24 port Gigabit Ethernet Switch 1100
Equipment Rack 500
Total - $38,565

Employment projections (based on the local needs assessment) for the industry by title and by credential
Employment Trends (are employment needs increasing or decreasing):
Auburn Hills addressed this topic at their Networking Advisory Board meeting as this program is an offshoot of that area. The board unanimously supported the addition of a degree/track to incorporate virtualization. In summer 2011, there were 3,151 job postings for VMware administrators posted on dice.com, a job site specializing in IT positions. According to the Michigan Labor Market Information, 805 annual networking-related job openings are expected in the state through 2018.
What are the qualifications/degree level for this occupation:
Associate degree or higher
Current supply in the field (how many people are available to fill the job needs)?
Not available but there are currently no other VMware Academies in the state of Michigan.
Salary projections for graduates:
Auburn Hills did not survey this but national and state data, along with our own experience with placing our networking graduates, indicate very good wage possibilities for individuals with this skill set. National data reports a median of $66,310 annually.
