Jazz and more to celebrate African-American arts
ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Baker College of Allen Park will commemorate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. by joining with the Arts League of Michigan (ALM) in celebrating African-American arts, Saturday, Jan. 18, and Monday, Jan. 20. The public is invited. All events and activities are free.

With the theme, “One Dream: Built Together,” the MLK Day FunFest will encourage participants to explore and enjoy African-American arts in honor of Dr. King. Among the activities and entertainment are storytelling, dance classes, hands-on art activities, a jazz band and vocalist and an art exhibition.

The Saturday event is 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Baker College of Allen Park, 4500 Enterprise Drive, Allen Park.

The Monday event, also at 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., is at the Carr Center, 311 East Grand River, Detroit. The 40,000-square-foot Carr Center is operated by ALM, an organization that promotes and preserves African and African-American cultural arts traditions.

“The MLK Day FunFest will be an exciting fair-style event that will be enjoyed by people of all ages,” said Yvonne Langley, Baker College of Allen Park vice president for career services. “By having the event at two locations, we are able to involve more people in this wonderful, cultural experience. We also are deeply appreciative of the City of Allen Park resolution in support of this event.”
