May 30, 2013

Largest graduating class in Allen Park campus history
A record 530 graduates from Baker College of Allen Park will be honored at commencement ceremonies, 2 p.m., Saturday, June 8, at Compuware Arena, 14900 Beck Road, Plymouth Township.

“We celebrate the joy of our graduates’ achievements and congratulate them for having stayed the course,” said Aaron J. Maike, Baker College of Allen Park President. “Each of them has made an investment in their future and is now better prepared with training and skills for workplace success.”

Keynote speaker is Tonya Allen, COO of the Skillman Foundation, a private grant-making foundation focused on developing good schools and neighborhoods for children. She is the architect of the Foundation’s 10-year, $100-million Good Neighborhoods program. Allen is slated to become president of the foundation in January 2014.

Allen has been widely recognized for her leadership skills, including being named to Crain’s Detroit Business 2007 “40 under 40” list, receiving the Rolling Stone magazine’s Brick Award that is given to the country’s top community leaders under age 30, and being named one of the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s “Five Nonprofit Innovators to Watch” in 2013. She was one of the first Detroiters and one of 44 emerging American leaders to receive the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship in 2011. The Fellowship brings together U.S. and European leaders to explore each other’s politics, business, innovation, and culture, throughout a 24-day program that includes a multi-city tour.

Jamie Peterson of Roseville, who is graduating with an associate degree in nursing, will address the class of 2013.
