December 17, 2013

600 students from area high schools will compete
ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Baker College of Allen Park will host the DECA District 8 Conference on its campus, Thursday, Dec. 19, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The awards ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Approximately 600 high school students from the Greater Detroit metro area will compete individually or on teams for district awards in a variety of marketing and business-related events. The competition provides students an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge, increase their marketing skills and develop and demonstrate their leadership skills.

“It’s inspiring to see so many young people who are passionate and dedicated to learning the skills necessary to succeed in business today,” said Aaron J. Maike, Baker College of Allen Park president. “Baker College is proud to support the excellent DECA programming that is helping develop emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.”

Some of the 30 competition categories are principles of business management, retail merchandising, business law and ethics team decision-making, professional selling event and entrepreneurship—innovation plan.

Winners at the district level will continue to compete at the DECA State Career Development Conference, March 14–16, 2014, in Detroit.

DECA is a membership organization representing students, educators, administrators and business leaders. In Michigan, approximately 7,100 students from 150 high schools participate in DECA. In the U.S., there are more than 210,000 high school, college and professional DECA members, and there is an additional 10,000 members in nine other countries.

Founded in 1946, it is one of nine Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) recognized
by the U.S. government as integral to career and technical education. All 50 U.S. state Departments of Education hold DECA’s charter and supervise DECA’s operation in their state.
