Baker College of Auburn Hills Invites Public to Participate in “Gift of Gratitude”
April 12, 2010
Several student, staff and faculty groups at Baker College of Auburn Hills have banded together to organize “Gift of Gratitude,” a fundraiser to benefit U.S. soldiers. The event, which begins April 12 and runs through May 5, 2010, includes several opportunities for community involvement. Baker’s goal is to collect enough donations and items to fill 200 boxes to send to servicemen and women on active duty.
“Gift of Gratitude is about giving back to the people who protect and keep us safe,” said Victoria Fanning, Baker College of Auburn Hills director of student activities. “Our efforts are a small token of our appreciation for their dedication, service and sacrifice.”
Collection boxes will be distributed throughout Baker’s Auburn Hills campus, located at 1500 University Drive, and students, faculty, staff and the general public are invited to drop off donations. Requested items include new cotton socks, personal hygiene products such as deodorant and shampoo, breakfast bars, cereal, packaged candy, coffee, tea, nuts, gum, playing cards and blank note cards.
As part of the 24-day event, there will be an opportunity to “Do the Write Thing” on April 19 and 20, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.
“We will have writing stations set up in our atrium for people to stop by and write a note to a soldier who is serving our country overseas,” said Fanning. “Our goal is 400 notes, and we invite parents to bring their sons and daughters, as soldiers love receiving letters from children.”
On April 27 through April 29, Baker College of Auburn Hills will host a glassware fundraiser.
“We’ll be collecting cups and saucers, china, glasses, stemware, napkins and tablecloths to sell in our atrium boutique,” said Fanning. “We’ll also set up a café-style area and sell baked goods, coffee and tea to visitors.”
On May 6 and 7, all the collected items will be sorted and packaged into the 200 boxes for delivery to Selfridge Air Force Base.
