Baker College Of Flint Hosts Robotics Camp For High School And Middle School Students

September 13, 2011

Baker College of Flint once again invited high school and middle school students to participate in Robotics Camp. This was the third year that the free event was held for area high school students and the second year for middle school students. A total of 18 students from six area high schools and 22 students from 12 middle schools, including Chittenango Middle School in New York, attended the 5-day event.

“We offer the camp in order to raise student interest in the exciting and important areas of science, mathematics, engineering and technology, and to provide a service to the community,” said Anca Sala, Ph.D., Baker College of Flint department of engineering chair. “We also want to increase awareness about the engineering programs and study opportunities at Baker College of Flint.”

The camps included hands-on activities, where students designed, built, programmed and tested robots that were required to complete various challenges. The high school students built two moving robots, each having an arm with a gripper at its end, which allowed the robot to pick up an object and move it to a desired location. The middle school students built their robots using the LEGO Mindstorms Education kits.

Dr. Sala organizes and coordinates the yearly event, with the assistance of engineering department instructors.
