Baker College Of Flint Student Honored By West Flint Business Association

September 15, 2011

“James is an outstanding student and a positive role model to other future educators,” said Beverly Schumer, Baker College of Flint education and human service dean. “He is very deserving of this honor and we are very proud of his achievement.”

Avery, a Holly resident, carries a 3.82 grade point average (GPA). Working toward a bachelor’s degree in education with a social studies and mathematics focus, he expects to graduate spring 2013. Avery is a member of Smart Teachers as Role Models (STAR), an organization whose mission is to recruit, develop, support and sustain promising and motivated students from under-represented groups to become teacher leaders. The STAR group is also involved in community service activities, mentoring grade school students and bringing a positive message about minority male teachers to both inner city and suburban schools. STAR is comprised of students from Baker College of Flint, Mott Community College and the University of Michigan – Flint.

The West Flint Business Association scholarship, given to an adult learner who is continuing his or her education, is awarded based on community service combined with academic achievement and the potential for giving back to the community.

“It is definitely an honor and accomplishment for me to receive this scholarship,” said Avery. “I hope this will encourage other adult learners to strive for excellent grades and commit to community involvement so that they may receive similar incentives.”

After earning his bachelor’s degree, Avery plans to continue his education by earning an endorsement in autism and a master’s degree in special education. His inspiration to become a teacher comes from his son, who has autism spectrum disorder.

Avery is married to Holly, an English teacher in the Flint Community School District. They have four children.
