Baker College Of Port Huron Awards Ed Kurtz Scholarship To Heather Bearden

September 29, 2011

Officials at Baker College of Port Huron have announced Heather Bearden as the recipient of the 2011 Ed Kurtz Leadership Scholarship award. Bearden received a $2,500 scholarship that is awarded to a Baker student who demonstrates academic achievement and either a commitment to community service or a successful balance of work, family and school obligations.

“Heather has maintained an outstanding scholastic record while devoting her spare time to organizations in the community,” said Connie Harrison, Ph.D., Baker College of Port Huron president. “We are delighted to honor her as this year’s recipient.”

Bearden, a full-time student at Baker’s Port Huron campus, expects to graduate June 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in human service. She is the lead housing resource specialist at Safe Horizons, a non-profit organization whose mission is to partner with the community to provide the resources, support and education necessary for every individual to become empowered and live a life free from domestic violence, sexual assault and homelessness.

A life-long Port Huron resident, Bearden currently carries a 3.83 Grade Point Average (GPA).

Baker College established this scholarship in 2004 in honor of Ed Kurtz, retired president and CEO of Baker College. Kurtz, a dynamic leader whose vocabulary does not include the word “impossible,” also exhibited extraordinary service to his neighbors, friends and community throughout his 34 years at Baker College. The Ed Kurtz Scholarship fund honors the efforts of Baker students who exemplify Ed’s leadership style and who serve their communities as leaders and volunteers or balance work and family obligations.
