Baker College Students Bring Home The Bacon In State Kitchen Design Competition

Three students honored; continue to national competition

Cynthia Hernandez of Eastpointe earned first place for her kitchen design in the state NKBA design competition. She plans to graduate in August with a certificate in kitchen and bath design and an associate degree in interior design from Baker College of Clinton Township.

Andrew Zoldos of Troy won the second-place award in the state NKBA kitchen design competition. He is working toward a certificate in kitchen and bath design and a bachelor’s degree in interior design at Baker College of Clinton Township.

Baker College Mark J. Lawson-4th
Mark Jay Lawson of Eastpointe was awarded fourth place for his kitchen design in the state NKBA competition. He plans to graduate next year with a certificate in kitchen and bath design and a bachelor’s degree in interior design from Baker College of Clinton Township.

Students from Baker College of Clinton Township earned three of the four top awards in the annual student design competition presented by the Michigan State Chapter of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA).

The three students whose winning kitchen designs will be submitted to the NKBA national competition are:

  • First place: Cynthia Hernandez of Eastpointe was awarded $300. The Baker College of Clinton Township student designed a unique multi-level island counter that included an elevated, built-in oven.
  • Second place: Andrew Zoldos of Troy, who attends classes at the Clinton Township and Auburn Hills campuses of Baker College, was awarded $200. He designed an area under a buffet counter for the client’s dog.
  • Fourth place: Mark Jay Lawson of Eastpointe was awarded $50. The Baker College of Clinton Township student incorporated a living wall into his design, using the flowers and plants for air filtration.

“Our students did very well, and I am proud of the hard work they put into their entries,” said Linda Welch, instructor at Baker College of Clinton Township who is a NKBA certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer (CMKBD). “Their success reflects positively on the type of students attracted to our program and on the kitchen and bath design program at Baker College.”

Certified kitchen designers judged the entries based on NKBA guidelines, neatness, creativity, build-ability, and function. All materials had to be “green,” or sustainable.

Welch explained that students were given a client profile, an existing floor plan, and information about the client’s needs. The finished entries included a new floor plan, a construction plan showing change to the architectural area of the room, a mechanical and electrical plan, and interpretive drawings, which are dimensioned elevations or perspective drawings. It was optional to create a rendered room drawing that displayed color, material and finish choices.

Graduates of the NKBA-accredited Baker College program have learned to use manual- and computer-generated applications to develop graphic presentations and contractual documents. They can specify appliances, cabinetry, building materials, and mechanical and electrical systems while applying current building codes. They are also eligible to earn the NKBA designation of associate kitchen and bath designer (AKBD).
