Lab Instructor - Dental Hygiene Program

Location: Baker College of Clinton Township
Compensation: Hourly rate based on education, experience, and existing wage rates for similar positions within Baker College Professional Services, Inc.

Work Schedule: Up to 28 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, some evenings and weekends may be required

Baker College Professional Services, Inc. seeks to hire an individual to be assigned to the position of LAB INSTRUCTOR – DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM (PART-TIME) for the benefit of and to be located at Baker College of Clinton Township

General Statement of Duties:

To facilitate student achievement in the clinical learning environment by providing program-specific expertise and instruction under the direct supervision of the Program Director.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Graduate of accredited dental school (D.D.S. or D.M.D.) with current license to practice dentistry in the state of Michigan required
  • Experience as didactic and/or clinical instructor in accredited dental hygiene program preferred
  • Maintain current CPR card
  • Maintain current State of Michigan dental license
  • Must be knowledgeable in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to lift and maneuver independently up to 25 lbs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervising Dentist: examines dental hygiene patients for clinical signs and symptoms or oral pathology, presence of dental caries, compromising medical conditions and/or disabilities, need for diagnostic radiographs, or any adjunct services that will improve the patient's oral, dental, or medical health
  • Supervising Dentist: recommends medical/dental referrals to the appropriate health-care practitioner depending on the physical findings of each individual patient. In addition, be able to give the suspected differential diagnosis to the patient and referring doctor, dentist, or specialist as to the specific problem involved (i.e. caries, periodontal condition, oral pathology etc.)
  • Student Success: provide instruction and assistance to students during their laboratory experience in accordance with curriculum requirements, assure that students meet all skill/performance outcomes in accordance with curriculum requirements, and assist Program Director with student files, surveys, schedules, and required hours.
  • Laboratory Management: oversee the organization of the laboratory, ensure safe procedures in laboratory, and attend safety training sessions as assigned.
  • Continuous Improvement: participate in relevant campus and system meetings in addition to all staff and faculty professional development events.
  • Instruct and grade each individual student on their ability to detect and record clinical pathology and caries, and their ability to perform the following adjunct procedures:
    • Amalgam polishing, application of sealants, evaluation of medical and dental history form, radiographic performance, dental chartings (soft and hard tissue), diagnostic study models, local anesthesia/nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation, and others as specified by the program director of dental hygiene
  • Provide temporary dental services in the clinic setting for patients with minor dental problems; smoothing rough margins, re-cementing crowns, etc.
  • Provide local anesthesia/nitrous oxide sedation to patients as needed
  • Prescribe needed prescription medications determined by evaluation
  • Provide individual recommendations for students with patient management problems
  • Integrate clinical activities with private practice by providing objective viewpoints and comments
  • Act as dental resource person for clinical dental hygiene faculty and students
  • Follow all Universal Precautions as outlined in the Student/Faculty Handbook
  • Stay current in profession of Dentistry, including attending continuing education programs as required by the State of Michigan for license renewal
  • Interprets positively Baker College and the Dental Hygiene Program goals and philosophies to other faculty, students and community
  • Participation in community activities as requested by Program Director
  • Instruct in lecture/clinic/lab
  • Assist the Program Director on matters regarding:
    • Class scheduling, student's clinical progress, selection of future equipment needs, front desk scheduling concerns, maintenance of accreditation standards, development of new procedures and policies as needed, and preparation for the National Board Examination/NERB
  • Other duties as assigned
