Baker College’s New Esports Coach Benjamin Sobczyk
Baker College has entered the world of Esports. Esports is short for electronic sports, where players compete using video games. Is this really a thing you might ask? Yes, esports has become very popular as both a competitive sport and entertaining hobby. Baker College has intramural, club teams, and a varsity team coming Fall 2025. Anyone can participate with the current esports competitive play options; the only requirement is that you are a full-time student (12 credit hours per semester). Baker College will host intramural competitions against other Baker students, and a competitive club team with 3-5 active titles/rosters. The club teams will stream one match per-week on Twitch and build a discord server with areas for every kind of gamer to build community.
Building community virtually and on campus is a major goal for the Baker College Esports program. Leading the esports charge is Benjamin Sobczyk, Head Esports Coach. Benjamin Sobczyk came from middle and high school education in the Kentucky school system. In 2020, he began his esports career, winning a state title in esports in their first year of existence. In 2022, he was picked up by Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY, to start competing in the collegiate esports ecosystem and to develop esports curriculum under the sports administration department. He recently moved to Michigan to join Baker College to create a premier collegiate esports organization.
“Baker College has a solid goal of becoming a premier Esports institution. To help create a pipeline for gamers looking to break into the new Esports world and funnel some of the best talent in the area into Baker’s competitive teams, we will be supporting grassroots Esports efforts at middle and high schools. We have a ton of work to do but we have the support, the leadership, and the drive to make our goals a reality!,” says Benjamin Sobczyk, Head Esports Coach.
