Mechanical engineers use engineering knowledge and skills to envision and create products that make our lives better and advance society. With our bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, you’ll learn how to develop, design, test and manufacture a variety of mechanical systems, devices and processes.

  • This program combines foundational knowledge in mathematics, science and mechanical engineering principles with the application of modern engineering tools, such as computer aided design and engineering analysis software, to provide a well-rounded education that will help you start a career in this exciting field.
  • As a student, you’ll have the chance to learn from experienced engineers who are focused on helping you learn the skills you’ll need to succeed on the job.
  • Through a combination of lectures, experimental laboratories, hands-on projects culminating in the year-long senior design project, and an internship work experience, you will be well prepared to start your career in the industry or continue your education with an advanced degree after graduation.

Why Study Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineers are essentially inventors who turn ideas into realities. They apply the theories of mathematics and science and the principles of engineering to design, develop and manufacture the tools, machines and mechanical devices that run our world. The discipline offers a wide range of opportunities: Mechanical engineers work on projects from jet engines to highly specialized microinstruments used in surgery.

After you graduate, you’ll have a very wide range of career opportunities to choose from. Mechanical engineers work in all sorts of industries, including aerospace, robotics, transportation, biomedicine and power generation. You’ll have the freedom to take your career in any direction you choose.

Curriculum

The Baker College Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program is a 4-year, ABET-accredited program consisting of 120 credit hours (90 hours of major courses and 30 hours of general education requirements). Our curriculum includes mechanics and mechanical design, thermal systems, finite element analysis, control systems, a senior design project and a 160-hour work experience with an engineering company.

Mechanical Design
Description
Introduces students to machine design, including materials and process considerations. Topics include load determination; stress, strain and deflection; and static, fatigue and surface failure theories. A design project is required.
EGR 4920
Senior Design Project
Description
Continues the topics in engineering project management while using concepts from engineering courses. Teams of students undertake a design project, build and document it, then demonstrate and present it to a group of peers. This is a capstone course in which students use everything learned throughout the program.
60 hours of contact time are required.
WRK 3010
Work Experience
Description
Provides a 160-hour bachelor's-level, learning experience in a technical environment structured to allow students to further develop skills and gain training in their major field. Students must achieve 70% or better in all coursework and 70% or better on all evaluations to receive credit for this course.

Beyond Michigan, our online graduates hail from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and other states.
