Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team (MCREST)
MCREST is a 30-day night time emergency shelter that provides a safe haven for our guests by providing accommodations in numerous churches throughout Macomb County since 1988. MCREST employs three full-time caseworkers that assist the clients at the office from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm daily. The caseworkers will perform the initial assessment with the clients and will begin assisting them with locating resources and providing referrals. The caseworkers will travel each evening to the churches and screen the guest for alcohol use and ask about their daily activity. MCREST collaborates with 84 churches that host between 35 – 60 guests per night with two churches running at all times to provide shelter for our guest. The churches provide a safe, clean environment from 6:00 p.m. each evening to 8:00 a.m. each morning. They provide three meals a day, showers, bus tickets, laundry, and transportation to the individuals that are working. In addition, we collect supplies such as towels, foam mattresses, linens, pillows, washcloths, blankets, and drug/alcohol testing to give to the churches. We provide medical assessments and mental health counseling through Downriver Community Services and we have provided co-pays for medication prescriptions, funds for state identification and birth certificates.
Our Choose A Path (CAP) program allows ten of our guest’s shelter for 120 days. They must set goals, individual case management, a savings program, weekly drug testing and mandatory support groups as needed for recovery. We also have a Relapse Prevention Recovery Coach for any person dealing with addiction issues.
MCREST has partnered with Baker College of Clinton Township for several years participating in internship placement program, career fair and various other events. The MCREST office has had the opportunity to hire three interns and we look forward to the continued partnership with the college for years to come!
