Sterile processing technicians make it possible for doctors, dentists, and other medical personnel to do their work in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities. Sterile processing technicians clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments and medical equipment.   • What is the high school GPA requirement to enroll into Baker?
    Baker College has a “right-to-try” admission policy. That means all students who have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent, such as a General Educational Development  (GED) certificate, are accepted at Baker.   • Can I take classes without a high school diploma or GED?
    If you haven't earned a diploma or a GED certificate, you may be able to take classes at Baker College. We will ask you to take placement tests to ensure you have the foundation of knowledge you need to successully complete college-level studies.   • How do I apply for Financial Aid?
    Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using the school code for the Baker College Campus that you plan to attend. Remember, you must apply for financial aid every year. New applications are available after January 1st each year. Always complete your FAFSA as early as possible. To help speed the application process, we encourage you to have your taxes completed prior to applying.     Once you have applied for financial aid, you will receive a Financial Aid Notification package from the Financial Aid office. Your FAFSA serves as the application for the Student Loan. The Loan Request Form must be completed and returned to the Financial Aid Office before the loan process can begin. A general education core is required for all Associate and Bachelor degrees. All graduates must meet the general education requirements established by each academic program.

College Success Online (COL112) is required for all first-time undergraduate freshmen and all online students enrolled in a certificate or degree program. This course will inform students of campus services, policies and procedures, and address learning styles and study strategies.

The Baker College Sterile Processing Technician certificate program focuses on how to clean, disinfect, sterilize, and distribute sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment so that they can be used safely. In addition to your classwork, you’ll have plenty of hands-on experience in the lab and in a sterile processing department in a clinical setting.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (HSC102): Breathes new life into resuscitation education, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) is designed to train professionals to respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies for adult, child, and infant victims. Consistent with the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR/ECC, BLS is the foundational CPR/AED program typically required for healthcare providers and public safety professionals. Through the use of lecture, skills demonstration and practice, case-based emergency response scenarios, and reflection and debriefing activities with a focus on team-based response, BLS builds the key critical thinking, problem solving, and team dynamic skills that are needed to drive better patient outcomes. Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive a 2-year Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

First Aid (Also required for HSC102): Prepares students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies and meets OSHA/workplace requirements. Through a combination of self-paced online learning and instructor-led classroom skill session you will have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate skill competency required for certification. The online portion features simulation learning – an interactive experience where participants respond to real-world emergencies in a virtual setting. The online portion must be completed prior to attending the classroom skill session and must be taken on a Flash-enabled computer with a high speed Internet connection. Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a certificate for First Aid valid for two years.

Teamwork, customer service, and cultural diversity will also be addressed. A research paper relating to the profession will be required.

Introduces students to the operation of the department, principles, and concepts related to sterilization and distribution, packaging and storage, modes of transmission of common diseases, standard precautions, safety measures in the department, and principles of asepsis.

Focuses on various specialties and the instrumentation associated with each. Identification, assembly, care, and handling of surgical instruments and equipment will be introduced. In addition, the basic principles of decontamination, sterilization, packaging, maintaining sterility, and storage will be addressed. Safety considerations and regulations will also be discussed. There is a laboratory component to this course. Students will gain hands-on experience cleaning, packaging, and wrapping surgical instrument sets for processing and distribution. This course consists of 20 hours of lecture and 40 hours of lab.

Covers all phases of securing employment in a required seminar. Students in degree programs may complete the seminar requirement any time during their final two quarters. Certificate students should attend in their last quarter.

Program Description

This program prepares graduates to enter the field of sterile processing. Sterile processors work in hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, and private offices, as well as for instrument and supply companies. This program focuses on cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and distribution of sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment used in various healthcare settings. Students will gain hands-on experience in a sterile processing department during the clinical portion of the program. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam. Graduates must attain 400 hours of working in the field of sterile processing before being eligible to sit for the national certification exam.

Essential Functions

These technical standards reflect performance abilities and characteristics that are necessary to successfully complete the requirements of the program at Baker College. These standards are not conditions of admission to the program. Persons interested in applying for admission to the program should review this information to develop a better understanding of the physical abilities and behavioral characteristics necessary to successfully complete the program.   • Perform or assist with and/or transfer, lift, move, position, and manipulate the client who is unconscious.
  • Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills during interactions with patients, staff, faculty and healthcare team members.
  • Demonstrate appropriate professional and procedural judgment decisions under stressful and/or emergency conditions (i.e. unstable patient condition), emergent demands (i.e. stat test orders), and a distracting environment (i.e., high noise levels, complex visual stimuli).
  • Recognize potentially hazardous materials, equipment, and situations and proceed safely in order to minimize risk of injury to patients, self, and nearby individuals by referencing, utilizing and adhering to OSHA requirements such as MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) and universal precautions.

Limited Enrollment
Full acceptance into the professional track of some programs is limited due to clinical site availability. Students compete to earn acceptance into these programs. Selection criteria have been developed to choose the most qualified students for limited enrollment programs.  Students who have successfully completed the conditional acceptance requirements for their program are eligible to apply for full acceptance in to the professional track of the program. Refer to the program information supplement for program specific details on the application process, the criteria used, and the courses used in the GPA calculations.

Once selected through the limited enrollment criteria, for full acceptance into a program, students must complete program requirements including, but not limited to: program specific orientations, background checks, drug screens, etc. Please contact your campus official for additional information.
