Excel in the technology field with an information systems degree. The rapid advances of Industry 4.0 continue to drive new jobs in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other areas, opening up a wide range of opportunities for information systems (IS) professionals.

You’re only limited by your level of education and expertise, or whether you choose a bachelor’s or master’s in information systems. Some jobs for information systems majors require an area of specialization for the Bachelor of Science in Information Systems, such as web development, project management, or information assurance, while some require a master’s degree, such as a master of science in information systems (MSIS).

If you’re not sure whether you’re ready for your master’s, then you can work toward your bachelor’s degree in the meantime before attending graduate school. Some information technology schools in Michigan offer the option to complete your BS and MSIS degrees online.

Information Systems Degree Jobs

Below are some career options for those with an information systems degree:

Business Analyst

If numbers and finance interest you, then an information systems degree can give you the technical skills needed to succeed as a business analyst. Business analysts must be able to use data science tools and models to analyze and provide recommendations using real data. A business analyst can work to improve processes or deliver data-driven reports to executives. You can become a business analyst by focusing your information systems degree in business.

Computer Systems Analyst

Systems architects work to analyze computer systems and make them more efficient. The duties of a computer systems analyst may include providing recommendations related to the organization’s IT infrastructure and processes. Anyone interested in becoming a systems analyst will need a combination of technical computer science skills and education on the latest technologies and how to implement them. If you’re interested in becoming a computer systems analyst, then an MBA in information systems degree will give you a competitive edge.

Data Analyst

Big data is the future for some of the largest businesses in the world. A data analyst or data engineer uses knowledge of specific coding languages and procedures, such as data warehousing and data mining, to analyze, automate and more efficiently apply real data to inform decision making. A data analyst would benefit from a data science-focused degree in information technology.

Computer Programmer or Software Developer

Computer programmers and software developers are actively involved in the programming, development, launching and refining of applications and computer systems. These applications and systems can be used on a computer, mobile device, or other technologies that operate with the use of software, such as planes or robots that roam the martian surface.

A computer programming degree provides the necessary technical skills to learn how to program, and a specialization, such as a video game software developer, can help you focus on a specific area of software development.

Web Developer

Websites have a programming language of their own. Web developers create websites by writing code that brings a design concept to life. Oftentimes, web developers are expected to think outside of the box to solve a problem, and this means an eye for the creative side of development, writing, design, etc., as there is some overlap between web development and web design. The best path to becoming a web developer is by completing an information systems degree in web development.

Computer and Information Research Scientist

A computer and information research scientist finds new ways to invent, design and innovate computer technologies. Many of the roles for this type of research are government affiliated or provided by computer systems and technology design companies.

The minimum requirement to become a computer and information research scientist is often a master’s degree, and a computer science degree as well as a masters in information systems (MSIS) degree provide an excellent foundation.

Information Security Analyst

Cybersecurity is one of the top-growing concerns for the IT industry. An information security analyst applies specialized knowledge of the vulnerabilities within information systems to protect and recover information and processes used within the organization.

A degree in information assurance or cybersecurity opens up the opportunity to become an information security analyst.

Earn Your Degree in Information Systems

Is information systems a good major? Yes! Information systems is a growing field that offers a number of opportunities for job security, high-paying positions and advancement within a company. Take a look at the types of degrees offered at information technology colleges to determine where you would like to focus your studies.
