Every organization needs reliable and secure computer and information systems. Information systems link business and technology to integrate all elements of an enterprise into a comprehensive network of responsive, proactive and dependable information delivery systems. Information systems are the brains of every organization, providing the tools to efficiently and effectively solve business problems, manage operations, interact with suppliers and customers, and drive revenue and performance.

As a student in our information security and assurance degree, you’ll gain an understanding of the wide range of skills it takes to work with information systems and keep data secure.

  • Our information assurance classes are led by experienced IS professionals, and you’ll learn about essential concepts, such as programming, database management, IS strategy and security, business analytics, project management and more.
  • You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to get practical hands-on experience by completing several projects and work experience in a real-world setting.

Why Study Information Assurance?

Information systems is one of the fastest-growing careers. Our information security and assurance degree is designed to integrate general business and management knowledge with expertise in computer information systems (including programming, databases, web, project management, networking, and security) to produce the knowledge and skills necessary for employment in a competitive job market.

Information systems professionals leverage the technology and tools to efficiently and effectively solve business problems, manage operations and infrastructure, interact with suppliers and customers, and drive revenue and performance. Graduates can continue their education with a Master of Science in Information Systems.

Information Assurance Curriculum

The Baker College Bachelor of Science in Information Systems information assurance degree is a 4-year, 120 credit hours program. The program includes 30 hours in general education, 69 hours in the information systems major, and 21 hours in the assurance specialist concentration. Information assurance courses include multiple programming languages, system modeling and design, business analytics, securing systems, as well as a senior project and a 150-hour work experience course.

Securing Information Systems

Description
Prepares students to protect private information systems from internal and external security threats. Discusses security holes in common Internet services and how to proactively defend against internal and external attacks. Discusses the philosophies of various security techniques, access lists, authentication and general security policy.

Security Policies and Auditing

Description
This course discusses the purpose, creation, deployment and revision of information protection policies. Reviews some typical policy contents. Prepares students to develop the related standards, procedures and guidelines associated with policies. Evaluates existing policy frameworks and prepares students to select appropriate ones for specific IT environments. Students will complete a project to develop, review, revise and apply a security program that meets business goals.

Ethical Hacking I

Description
Prepares students to assess and then correct the vulnerabilities present within information systems. Students examine methods and tools commonly used in attacks and explore countermeasures and intrusion detection techniques.

Incident Response and Disaster Recovery

Description
Prepares students to identify risks within businesses and how to minimize loss. Discusses cost/benefit analysis of disaster recovery planning. Identifies methods for minimizing the risk of a disaster and the response tasks to be performed during a disaster. Details the development of a disaster recovery plan (DRP).
