My career change was sparked by a wake-up call from my brother-in-law and the unwavering support of my wife. She encouraged me and took on additional responsibilities at home, allowing me to balance full-time work and studies. My journey from retail to HR leadership demonstrates the transformative power of education and the endless possibilities it can unlock. Baker College played a pivotal role in my success, and I hope my story inspires others to pursue their dreams, no matter where they are in life.
When I first chose Baker College, I was drawn by their unique offering of a fully online bachelor’s degree program with a concentration in Human Resource Management. This flexibility allowed me to manage my family, who relocated from Michigan to Florida in 2006, and work commitments while pursuing my education full-time.
During my time at Baker College, the support and challenges presented by my professors were instrumental in developing the skills I now use daily in my HR role. I honed my abilities in professional writing, information retrieval, and applying knowledge practically—all crucial for my success.
Before earning my degree, I felt stuck in retail management. I wanted a more fulfilling career that allowed for a better work-life balance. At 41, with my degree in hand, I gained the confidence to transition into a new field. My life experience, combined with the skills learned at Baker, equipped me to excel in the HR profession, which led to me being named the Sarasota-Manatee Human Resources Association (SHRA) Human Resources Professional of the Year. I am very proud of this prestigious award, which highlights the impact of my Baker College education.
Since graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Business Administration concentrating in Human Resource Management, I have served as the Director of Human Resources at Diversified Material Specialists Inc. (DMSI). I was the first HR professional hired at DMSI, starting as an HR generalist and quickly being promoted to Director. Under my leadership, the HR department has flourished, earning several accolades, including the Sarasota-Manatee Human Resources Association’s Diversity Award and recognition as a top workplace by local publications.
In addition to my professional achievements, I am passionate about giving back to the community. I was a finalist for the Tampa Bay Business and Wealth Magazine’s Philanthropists of the Year Awards in the Volunteer of the Year category and the inaugural DMSI Cares Person of the Year in 2022. Through DMSI Cares, I have organized numerous charitable initiatives, from back-to-school bashes to mission trips in the Philippines. I also volunteer with local organizations, including the All-Faiths Food Bank and the Sarasota Fellowship of Christian Athletes, helping to support and uplift our community.
My story is a testament to the life-changing impact of education and the boundless opportunities it can create. Baker College was integral to my success, and I am forever grateful for its role in my career transformation.
