My name is Larry Crockett, and I am a proud graduate of Baker College (Allen Park). I began my journey at Baker in 2011 and earned my degree in 2013.
I am a Detroit entrepreneur and the founder of two companies, with a partnership in a tech firm. My condiment company, Lorraine’s Premium BBQ Sauce, is an international brand headquartered in both Ghana, Africa, and Detroit, MI.
The most well-thought-out plan might not necessarily be the one that God chooses for you. Baker College helped me navigate the next chapters of my life, even when life took unexpected turns. My intention was to pursue a medical career beginning with Radiology. Then, I planned to delve deeper into the medical field and obtain a P.A. or M.D. but I hadn’t decided. However, life isn’t always a straight line. I was just one point away from being accepted into the Radiology program. I was given the option to reapply in one year, so I decided to keep the momentum going, and I entered the Health Service Administration curriculum, earning my degree in 2013.
The Baker College degree impacted my journey in terms of confirmation that, “Yes, I can” in the toughest of circumstances. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I worked in an automotive factory with long hours. Despite the challenges, I successfully completed my undergraduate studies at Baker and graduate studies at Walden University. One of the most rewarding full-circle moments was returning to the Baker College Allen Park campus as an instructor.
Words of Wisdom: Your college experience is your college experience—enjoy every moment and challenge. Approach each challenge as an opportunity to learn, grow, conquer, and achieve. If someone else has completed this course of study, then you can as well. It is not impossible.
What Black History Month Means to Me: Black history cannot be summed up in a month. Every day is Black History—history is every day. The accomplishments by Black leaders benefit the entire world and, therefore, should be recognized and celebrated as achievements by great individuals—American, Black, white, Native, or otherwise.
As a business owner, I am history in the making, as I have registered my company in Ghana, purchased land for agriculture, and am building a manufacturing facility there as well.
