Do you want to make a difference in the lives of young learners? It could be time to pursue an early childhood education bachelor’s degree to build the foundational skills and knowledge needed to shape children’s lives and learning experiences.

Still wondering if a career in early childhood education is right for you? With an understanding of what early childhood education entails, as well as the common roles and responsibilities of these educators, you can make your own informed decisions regarding your future career.

What Is Early Childhood Education?

Early childhood education refers to the instruction of children from the time they are infants through approximately age eight. This early education plays a pivotal part in the development of a young learner’s social, cognitive, physical, and emotional skills. In fact, a child’s experiences in these early years of learning can have lifelong impacts on how they view the world.

The Role and Responsibilities of an Early Childhood Educator

Early childhood educators, ranging from preschool teachers to program administrators, play a central role in the development of young children. With this in mind, their responsibilities can be incredibly diverse and involve not just formal teaching but also fostering a safe learning environment for all children.

While specific jobs can vary considerably, some of the most common responsibilities of an early childhood educator include:

  • Creating a safe and nurturing environment where children feel secure and supported in their growth.
  • Planning and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and programs that align with accepted standards.
  • Promoting cognitive and language development among learners.
  • Supporting social and emotional development, providing additional support to those who may need it.
  • Observing and assessing child development.
  • Individualizing instruction by adapting teaching methods to suit each learner’s unique needs.
  • Engaging families and communities by keeping them involved in their children’s progress and working toward goals together.
  • Maintaining classroom management by establishing rules and routines.
  • Promoting physical development with plenty of opportunities for physical activity, health, and nutrition education.
  • Advocating for children’s needs, including special needs support where applicable.
  • Managing classroom resources and technology integration.

When educators carry out these roles effectively, they can have a profoundly positive impact on children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development — setting children up for success as they advance in their formal education.

What Is a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education?

If this type of work sounds enjoyable, then you’ll probably want to look into a bachelor’s in early education or bachelor’s in early childhood education. This type of degree typically takes four years to complete and, compared to similar degrees (such as a bachelor’s in elementary education or child development) is specifically geared toward the teaching of students ages eight and under.

Bachelor of Early Childhood Education Curriculum

What you can expect from early childhood education classes can vary from one program to the next. However, each program will have its own foundational courses that cover key topics like common teaching methods, child psychology, and development.

Additionally, many early childhood programs include a student teaching or internship component, where students can gain hands-on experience working in a real classroom.

Course Breakdown and Key Subjects

What can you expect from early childhood education courses? Though no two programs are identical, many of them offer coursework in the following:

  • Foundational courses, including classes in early childhood education, theories, and practices. Examples may include courses in child development and educational psychology.
  • Teaching methods and curriculum design, such as courses that focus on designing age-appropriate curricula. These courses may also include classroom management techniques for educators and assessment/evaluation methods that are specific to young learners.
  • Specialized courses, including those in special education, early literacy, language development, and technology integration in the early childhood classroom.
  • Practicum and student teaching experience, which can help prepare future educators for real-world classroom management.

Online Early Childhood Education Programs

Today, it is possible to enroll in early childhood education programs online rather than having to commute to a physical campus to attend classes.

Advantages of Online Programs

There are numerous potential benefits of enrolling in an online program, beginning with flexibility in scheduling for busy students. This can be particularly helpful for those who have other life obligations (such as a job, a family, or both). Meanwhile, online programs tend to be more accessible to students in different parts of the country because enrollment isn’t limited by geographic location.

What to Look for in an Online Program

Those considering an online bachelor’s in early education should do their research carefully and find a reputable program that is not only accredited but also offers a wide range of support services for students who may need academic advising, tech support, and more.

In choosing an online program, prospective students should also inquire as to how a program handles practicum and student teaching requirements.

Online vs. On-Campus Early Childhood Education Programs

Although there are certainly some notable advantages to completing an early childhood education program online, it’s important to consider the benefits of an on-campus program as well. For some learning styles, an online degree program simply cannot replicate the face-to-face experience of being in a real classroom, especially when learning how to teach in a classroom setting yourself.

On the other hand, the demands of commuting to a physical campus and being in class for set times each week can be burdensome for those who have other priorities and obligations.

The Long-Term Benefits of a Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education

Whether you get your degree in-person or online, there are several benefits to obtaining your degree in early childhood education.

Personal Fulfillment and Impact

First, you’ll get to enjoy the sense of personal pride and fulfillment that comes along with completing a comprehensive degree program in a field that makes a substantial impact on future generations. With the skills and knowledge gained in your degree program, you can go on to make a real difference in young learners’ lives.

Job Stability and Demand

There is a steady demand for early childhood educators across the country. Employment opportunities for preschool teachers are expected to grow in line with the average for all occupations over the next decade. This consistent growth reflects the ongoing need for qualified professionals in early childhood education.

Career Growth and Advancement

An early childhood education degree can also lead to various opportunities for career advancement and professional growth. By earning additional certifications and designations, those with an early childhood education degree can specialize in such areas as special education, administration, curriculum development, or another area of interest.

Choosing the Right Early Education Bachelor’s Program

Ready to begin your search for the right early childhood education program? Below are some factors to keep in mind as you get started.

Accreditation and Reputation

Choosing an accredited program can impact your career prospects because having a degree from an accredited school or program (such as one that is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission) demonstrates that you have met certain standards for a quality education. In addition to accreditation, you can learn more about a program’s reputation by searching online for reviews and ratings from previous students or respected sources of authority.

Program Flexibility and Format

The format of an early childhood education program can also affect whether it’s the right choice for you. Consider, for example, whether you need an online or on-campus program — or perhaps you’d benefit from a combination of both (hybrid).

Many programs are offered in both part-time and full-time formats, too, so you’ll need to decide what type of course load you can reasonably take on each semester. After all, this will affect how long it takes you to graduate.

Support Services and Resources

Make sure the program you select offers plenty of support resources available to help you succeed. This may include anything from academic advising and tutoring to career services, mentorship opportunities, libraries, and online learning tools.

Financial Considerations

Finally, consider your own financial situation as you enter a degree program. If you’re like many students who need financial aid, you’ll want to explore the options available through your school. Take time to apply for any grants, scholarships, or other programs that may make paying for school easier, and be sure to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) ahead of the deadline to maximize your aid.

Aside from grants and scholarships (which don’t need to be paid back), students also have the option of taking out loans to help pay for school. These loans may be federal or private loans, which may be subsidized or unsubsidized and offered at varying interest rates.
