Health Information Management Program Highlights

Develop foundational knowledge of healthcare organization operations, including healthcare regulation, project management of health systems, computer information systems, database privacy, and security of health information with a HIM degree. Privacy and Security Management

Description
This course introduces three broad subjects: (1) privacy compliance, best practices, and program management for healthcare information management. (2) framework of healthcare information security management, including protection management, risk assessments, program oversight, and security protection pathways. (3) compliance with healthcare regulations, legislation, policy, and the legal structure pertaining to healthcare laws, standards, and regulations.

Digital Literacy in Healthcare

Description
This course provides an overview of electronic documentation and the functionality of the electronic health record (EHR). The course advances student understanding of clinical workflow, database management, and system support of the electronic health record.

Healthcare Systems: Analysis and Design

Description
This course addresses methods and techniques of healthcare information system analysis and design as performed with the system development life cycle. The course offers techniques for gathering data, system solutions, problem definition, and evaluation of information as it relates to healthcare and information management.

No. While students with a background in health information technology may find it helpful, the HIM program is designed for both new and transfer students, including those from non-healthcare backgrounds. The HIM degree starts with foundational courses to bring everyone up to speed.

  • ICD and CPT Coding – Focuses on medical coding systems used for billing and classification of conditions

  • Revenue Cycle Management – Examines the full financial process of patient care, from scheduling and billing to payment collection and claims resolution

Yes. Students complete a Professional Practice Experience (PPE), which is an in-field practicum designed to help them:

  • Apply classroom knowledge in real-world healthcare settings
  • Build professional skills and confidence
  • Gain experience with EHR systems, documentation, and team collaboration

The PPE is typically completed near the end of the program and is coordinated by Baker to match your location and career interests.

Graduates are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam through AHIMA. This credential is widely recognized for roles in HIM management, compliance, and informatics.

RHIA Certification: 

  • Validates your expertise in health information systems, data privacy, and healthcare compliance
