Sabryna Bolthouse, College of Nursing Grauate
Muskegon, MI – For many teen mothers, the path to a college degree is one filled with obstacles– but Muskegon, MI, native Sabryna Bolthouse didn’t let the statistics define her.
This spring, Bolthouse graduated from Baker College with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, not just earning a degree, but proving that determination, resilience, and love can overcome even the steepest of odds.
“I wasn’t supposed to be here,” Bolthouse shared. “I became a mom at just 14 years old. My life changed in an instant—I had to grow up fast and focus on someone who depended on me completely. That’s when I realized why I was meant to be a nurse.”
Bolthouse’s path wasn’t traditional. As a first-generation college student and young mother, she faced more than her share of challenges—sleepless nights, demanding coursework, and moments where giving up seemed like the easier choice. But through every setback, her motivation never wavered.
“I wanted to provide for my children in a way I had never been provided for. I wanted to show them what was possible,” Bolthouse said.
Bolthouse chose Baker College for its smaller class sizes and personalized support. That sense of connection made all the difference as she balanced the rigors of nursing school with the responsibilities of motherhood. “I never felt like just another student; I felt seen and supported.”
“Her journey has been nothing short of remarkable. She brought determination, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose to everything she did,” said Rachel Fajardo MSN, RN Program Director, College of Nursing. “She embodies the true spirit of nursing: empathy, professionalism, and an unwavering dedication to growth. It was a privilege to witness her transformation and to support her along the way.”
Now, it’s time to prepare for the next chapter in her journey. She has been accepted into a critical care residency program and is on track to become an ICU nurse—her dream role. She also has her sights set on graduate school and someday, returning to Baker College as an instructor.
“Nursing is more than a career to me—it’s a reflection of everything I’ve lived through and the compassion I’ve gained along the way. My children are my biggest ‘why,’ and I hope my journey shows them—and others—that anything is possible.”
Bolthouse’s story is a powerful reminder that success is not always about how fast you finish, but how deeply you believe in the reason you started.
