Alumni Spotlight: Olga Kovtun’s Journey from Design to Community Impact
For Olga Kovtun, a career is less about a straight line and more about building layers of courage, purpose, and service. As a Senior Marketing Specialist at HRPro and a 2025 Troy Chamber Community Impact Award nominee, Olga blends high-level brand strategy with a heart for grassroots community building.
Her journey began with a focus on graphic design and web development, where she quickly realized that visuals are only as powerful as the strategy behind them.
“Early roles required me to wear many hats: designer, marketer, strategist, problem-solver,” Olga reflects. “That hands-on environment shaped my adaptability and taught me how to build solutions from scratch, often with limited resources but unlimited creativity.”
The Baker College Foundation: More Than a Degree
Olga credits her time at Baker College for providing the “career compass” she uses today. It wasn’t just about learning software; it was about understanding the mechanics of a successful organization. By blending the technical world of web design with the foundational principles of business administration, she developed a unique “dual lens” that allowed her to see how creativity and strategy work together to drive real results.
Baker gave her the space and encouragement to go beyond the classroom. She didn’t wait for graduation to start making an impact; she intentionally applied her coursework to real-life scenarios. While balancing her studies, Olga volunteered with Services for Older Citizens (SOC) in Grosse Pointe, where she designed their monthly newsletters. This role taught her a lesson that remains at the core of her work today:
“Design is not just about aesthetics, it’s about clarity, dignity, and connection.”
Her internship with the American Red Cross in downtown Detroit further solidified her path, exposing her to the synergy between mission-driven work and corporate structure. These early experiences at Baker instilled in her a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility, the belief that when you’re given an opportunity, you give your best.
Leading Through the Noise
With over 18 years of experience, Olga’s resume is a testament to her “intentional growth.” Whether she is leading design and content for national recognition initiatives at HRPro or serving as the Marketing & Communications Director for TEDxPontiac 2026, her goal remains the same: using communication to bridge gaps.
When the world shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic, Olga leaned into her role as a communicator, hosting over 100 podcasts and participating in international forums to keep people connected. On the Ambitious Entrepreneur Network, she shared insights on how visual communication serves as a silent ambassador for businesses:
“Visual communication is more than just a logo… It’s about how you make people feel before you ever speak a word to them. It’s about building trust in a digital world.”
Her commitment to people-first communication is also evident in her work with the Creative Society, where she has hosted global discussions on unity. In a recent Shoutout Michigan feature, she noted:
“I actually had to learn to like people, and now I can confidently say that I love people, humanity, collaboration, community, everything we create as a common good.”
Curating Connection in Metro Detroit
Olga’s influence is felt deeply within the local community through her “Business Networking For Good” series. By curating and hosting events across Metro Detroit, from Rochester to Troy, she has created spaces where professionals can connect with purpose, rather than just for profit.
Now a member of Leadership Oakland Class XXXVI, Olga continues to push herself into “uncomfortable” spaces to ensure she is always growing. From being featured on the cover of North Troy Living Magazine to speaking at nonprofit conferences, she remains grounded in the relationships she built early in her journey.
“Baker College empowered me to be curious, proactive, and self-driven,” she says. “I learned the value of showing up, contributing meaningfully, and being grateful for every opportunity to learn. That mindset became the foundation for everything that followed.”
