Royal Oak, MI — As part of National First-Generation College Celebration Day (November 8), which Baker College extends into a weeklong celebration, we celebrate the resilience, achievements, and community of first-generation students who are transforming the future of higher education.
With more than 35 percent of Baker students identifying as first-generation, Baker continues to build a culture of belonging and support through intentional programming, scholarships, and mentorship opportunities.
Earlier this year, Baker College was named one of sixty new members of the FirstGen Forward Network for 2025–2026, a national initiative recognizing institutions that demonstrate a strong, sustained commitment to advancing first-generation student success. The honor positions Baker among only twelve institutions in Michigan to hold this distinction.
“Our commitment to first-generation student success is rooted in our belief that higher education should be accessible, inclusive, and transformative,” said Dr. Iris Lane, Director of Student Services, First Generation Student Success. “We’re dedicated to creating pathways of support that empower first-gen students to thrive academically, personally, and professionally.”
That commitment comes to life through several collegewide initiatives:
- First-Gen Pride: More than 100 students have shared their stories through the I’m Proud to Be First campaign, celebrating identity and achievement.
- First-Gen Scholarships: More than 200 new students have received financial support designed specifically for first-generation learners.
- First-Gen Steering Committee: They provide strategic direction, guidance, and support for first-generation initiatives and programs. Its purpose is to chart the course for first-gen success while ensuring alignment with Baker College’s mission and values.
- 1st Gen Bees Student Organization: A community that fosters connection, celebrates success, and creates a safe space for first-gen voices.
- From One First-Gen to Another Tips: Current and alumni first-gen students share practical advice to help others navigate college life.
- First-Gen Celebrations: Events across campuses recognize and uplift first-generation student identity, fostering a sense of pride, belonging, and community across Baker College.
These programs—combined with Baker’s ongoing partnerships and national recognition—reflect a strategic focus on access, inclusion, and student success.
As part of National First-Generation College Celebration Week, Baker is hosting a full lineup of events that honor the perseverance and pride of our first-gen community. From interactive “Pop Out” Stations and student panels to alumni discussions and trivia challenges, the week offers opportunities to connect, reflect, and celebrate what it means to be the first in your family to pursue higher education.
“Our students’ determination inspires us every day to continue building pathways that help them achieve their goals—and lead the way for future generations,” said Lane.
