Royal Oak, MI — Baker College announces the expansion of its varsity esports program, The Swarm, with the launch of a new Rocket League team. The roster includes three talented Michigan natives: Aiden Lawson (Imlay City), Wyatt Grimwood (Owosso), and Noah Jackson (Perry).
The addition of Rocket League marks another step forward in Baker College’s vision for esports: steady, intentional growth that develops students both as competitors and future professionals. Often described as “soccer with cars,” it’s the most popular collegiate esports title nationwide and one of the fastest-growing games in Michigan. Nearly every college esports program in the state fields a Rocket League team, making it a natural next step in Baker’s esports growth strategy.
“Rocket League was always the title I had in mind for our second team,” said Henry Johnston, Director of Esports at Baker College. “Our inaugural year with Valorant was an incredible success, and this expansion proves our program is on the rise. Baker is committed to building one of the strongest collegiate esports programs in Michigan and beyond.”
For players like Wyatt Grimwood, the chance to continue competing while pursuing higher education is meaningful. “It means a lot,” said Grimwood. “It means that I get to continue along with esports and enjoy learning about a career that I want to get into.”
New teammate Noah Jackson echoed the excitement: “I’m very grateful to be on The Swarm. It’s giving me an opportunity to come to Baker and get an education, and I’m very excited to be part of the team.”
With a strong foundation built in its inaugural season, The Swarm continues to showcase Baker’s commitment to innovation and student success. Student-athletes in The Swarm have the opportunity to earn esports scholarships, reflecting Baker’s investment in their growth and success. The college also offers a Bachelor of Science in Esports Management, providing students with the knowledge and skills to pursue leadership roles in the global esports ecosystem.
Baker College Esports was established in Fall 2023, beginning as a club. In Fall 2024, the college officially launched its varsity program, The Swarm, with one purpose: to compete at the highest level while preparing student-athletes for life beyond the game. The program combines a professional team environment with academic integrity, discipline, and personal growth. Players receive top-tier coaching, access to cutting-edge facilities, and the resources to thrive both in the classroom and on stage.
