Muskegon, MI — Baker College Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students brought the world to Harbor Terrace Senior Living with a creative and inclusive event titled “Around the World with Baker OTA Students.”
Seven OTA students designed and hosted a global-themed day for approximately 25 residents, transforming the senior living community into a hub of international fun and connection. Upon arrival, residents received passports and souvenir photos before “traveling” through a series of activity stations.
Participants painted tulips in Denmark, enjoyed a food encounter in Paris, crafted fanny packs in Florida, and played bingo in Mexico — all designed and facilitated by the students.
This collaboration began when the OTA program sought a local nursing home partner to help students practice soft skills with the geriatric population ahead of their clinical rotations. The experience provided students with hands-on learning opportunities to adapt activities for all levels of care while fostering meaningful engagement with residents.
“This was our first time partnering with Harbor Terrace, and it was a smashing hit,” said Ashley Moblo, Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for the OTA program. “The residents benefited from a free, inclusive activity designed with their needs in mind, and our students gained invaluable real-world experience.”
The event aligns with the OTA program’s geriatric learning goals, giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of age-related changes in health, mobility, and equipment use. Students practiced interviewing, communication, and adaptive techniques—such as adjusting workspace height, enlarging materials for visibility and grip, and providing hand-over-hand assistance—to make every activity accessible.
Residents responded with enthusiasm and warmth. Many shared stories, asked students about their career aspirations, and expressed joy through smiles, laughter, and hugs.
“I enjoyed participating in the geriatric party for class,” said OTA student Jolene Gilmore. “It was more meaningful and fulfilling than an in-class assignment. It felt like a step into the real world of my future career.”
Following the event’s success, Baker College plans to make this community partnership a recurring part of the OTA curriculum—continuing to build connections, promote inclusivity, and provide hands-on learning that prepares students for impactful careers.
