Update: Vaccine Mandate for Baker College Students
BakerProud,
As the world continues to evolve through the COVID-19 pandemic, it is evident that we will need to remain knowledgeable and flexible in our approaches to addressing the pandemic. We will need to address peaks and valleys for the foreseeable future by using a multitude of mitigation strategies. These include vaccinations, boosters, masking, handwashing, social distancing, and staying home when you do not feel well.
Based on the progress made in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, BC is suspending the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students. This decision does not change BC’s commitment to the protection that vaccinations bring in contracting COVID-19 and reducing the severity of infections, and we strongly encourage everyone who is able to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.
Effective July 1, 2022, vaccinations or approved exemptions are not required to attend BC classes on campus or live in the residence halls. College of Health Science, School of Nursing, and School of Occupational Therapy students are encouraged to consult with their Program Directors to determine vaccination requirements for their specific program.
The BC Pandemic Response Team (PRT) continues to evaluate infection, hospitalization, and mortality rates to ensure decisions are grounded in available data. In addition, BC supports CDC and local health department recommendations. Baker College will adjust pandemic policies to prioritize student and staff safety.
Furthermore, based on guidance from the State of Michigan, individuals who are deemed a COVID-19 close contact are not required to quarantine unless they become symptomatic. If you begin having COVID-19 symptoms or test positive for COVID-19, you are required to fill out the health screening form and can not come to campus until you are cleared by the campus Director of Student Affairs.
BC looks forward to transitioning through the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing to support student success.
Sincerely,
Baker College Pandemic Response Team

Updated BC Mask Policy (Effective February 16, 2022)
Dear BakerProud,
The Baker College Pandemic Response Team has updated the BC mask policy. This update is effective immediately and it is based on the State of Michigan decision to drop masking recommendations for indoor settings and schools on February 15, 2022. Please review the linked BC mask policy.
College of Health Science, School of Nursing, and School of Occupational Therapy students and faculty working at clinical sites may still be required to wear masks. Please make sure that you understand the requirements of the health care facility you are entering.
Unvaccinated individuals are still required to complete the health screening on a daily basis and vaccinated individuals must complete the health screening form to report a COVID-19 positive test result, COVID-19 symptoms, and close contact with someone who is COVID positive/symptomatic.
Thank you,
The BC Pandemic Response Team

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements for BC Students
Over the past 20 months, our country and the world have continued to move through the COVID-19 pandemic. The BC Pandemic Response Team (PRT) and executive leadership team could not be more proud of how the students, faculty, and staff have adjusted and succeeded during a worldwide pandemic. We are truly BakerProud of the BC community.
Based on growing evidence of the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine, BC will require students who attend on-ground classes or live in the BC residence halls, along with all faculty, and staff to be fully vaccinated by the start of Spring semester 2022. The decision to require the COVID-19 Vaccine, while not taken lightly, is based on ongoing evaluation of the vaccine by healthcare professionals across the world, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) full approval of the vaccine, and the college’s desire to move forward and eventually out of the pandemic.
Students will be able to upload a copy of their vaccination card to a secure BC portal. This can be done anytime starting today. While it is our hope that everyone will be fully vaccinated before the start of the Spring semester, BC has an established process for health and religious exemption. Exemption information is available on www.baker.edu/coronavirus.
Another important step is to complete the pre-health screening every day prior to coming to campus. If someone becomes ill with COVID-19, filling out this pre-health screening informs BC that you were on campus and allows us to communicate with you regarding any potential risk of close contact. It is critical that you fill out this for every day that you are planning to come to campus.
Again, BC students who attend on-ground classes or live in the BC residence halls are required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated by December 1, 2021.
Students who do not provide proof of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption by December 1, 2021:
- will be able to register for Online and Online Live courses for the spring 2022 semester
- will not be eligible to register for face-to-face campus-based classes
- will be dropped from face-to-face campus-based classes
- will not be eligible to live in Residence Halls
BC has partnered with local health departments and Rite Aid to provide COVID-19 vaccinations and we encourage you to schedule an appointment with one of these organizations as soon as possible. The COVID-19 vaccine is free for everyone.
The decision to require vaccinations for all BC students who attend face-to-face classes or live in the BC residence halls aligns with numerous other organizations. Getting vaccinated is philosophically BC’s way forward out of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The vaccine is safe and effective and it is the best way to fight the COVID-19 virus. This requirement ensures a safe campus and supports the overall public health that will assist us in getting to the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Have a great rest of your fall semester and be BakerProud.
Sincerely,
Baker College Pandemic Response Team

There continues to be uncertainty and change in the pandemic and we understand that there could be anxiety around returning to face-to-face campus operations. The PRT is excited to lay out some of the specific plans for coming to campus.
- At this point in time, masks are not required.
- If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to someone who is COVID-19 Positive, please fill out the pre-health screening form (apps.baker.edu) and do not come to campus until you are cleared by the Director of Student Affairs or the Director of Academic Affairs.

Vaccination Requirements for Health Care Students
BakerProud Health Care Students,
As we are moving closer to the start of our fall semester, we continue to evaluate our public health protocols for COVID-19. Because COVID-19 has completely changed the landscape of health care around the world, we believe that protecting our health care students and the communities they serve against the virus is particularly important. The COVID-19 vaccines are effective at greatly reducing the spread of the virus and its variants and preventing serious illness and hospitalization. In addition, we continue to see our clinical partners require all personnel, including our students and faculty, to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
The BC PRT, with consultation with the Provost and the Deans of Nursing, Health Science, and OT, will require the COVID-19 vaccination for all students in programs in the College of Health Science, School of Nursing, and School of Occupational Therapy.
We encourage students to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible. On or before September 10, 2021, you will need to submit proof that you have been fully vaccinated by providing a copy (or picture) of your COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card to your Program Director, where it will be kept in your confidential student health file. As with other vaccines, we have a process for accommodating medical and religious exemptions. Students should contact the Dean of their College/School or Program Director if they would like information about that process.
Students who are not fully vaccinated and who have not received an exemption will be required to step out of their program of study indefinitely. Additionally, students who start the Fall semester and are removed from or are unable to be placed in a clinical site due to not being vaccinated will forfeit 100% of their Fall tuition.
BC is dedicated to student learning and in health care, clinical experiences are critical to the learning experience. The PRT encourages you to communicate with your Dean and/or Program Director as soon as possible to ensure there is no lapse in your education.
Sincerely,
BC Pandemic Response Team

Revised COVID-19 Campus Protocols Effective Monday, June 28
Dear BakerProud,
As you are probably aware, the State of Michigan has removed almost all COVID-19 regulations. The BC PRT has evaluated the protocols that were developed to keep our campus community safe during the pandemic and we are very proud of what you have accomplished over the past 16 months.
The PRT is happy to announce that we are removing most of our COVID-19 protocols on campus effective Monday, June 28, 2021. Below are the details regarding the changes you will see on campus.
- Pre-Health Screening is not required to enter campus.
- Masks are no longer required for vaccinated or unvaccinated individuals on campus (indoors or outdoors).
- Social distancing is not necessary for anyone on campus.
- Quarantine and Isolation are still mandatory for individuals who are COVID-19 Positive, Symptomatic, or Close Contact.
- Anyone who is not feeling well or has been exposed to COVID-19 should fill out the pre-health screening form (apps.baker.edu) and not come to campus until they are cleared by the Director of Student Affairs or the Director of Academic Affairs.
Masks and Social Distancing are a personal choice and are still recommended by the CDC for unvaccinated and at-risk individuals. Anyone coming to campus who wishes to wear a mask or social distance is encouraged to do so. BC will continue to maintain a supply of masks on campus for individuals who wish to wear one.
We will continue to operate with a single entry point for our campus buildings throughout the remainder of the summer term.
BC has joined the White House COVID-19 College Vaccine Challenge and while we have come a long way in our fight with the virus, vaccinations are the key to closing the door on this pandemic. The BC Executive Leadership Team and the PRT continue to encourage everyone who is able to take the COVID-19 Vaccine to get vaccinated.
Sincerely,
BC Pandemic Response Team

Plans to Return to Campus for Fall 2021
Dear BakerProud,
We hope you are well. The Pandemic Response Team (PRT) is actively planning for returning to campus for the fall 2021 semester. The current plans include a return to campus for many employees on August 9, 2021, including a face-to-face freshman kick-off on August 18, 2021! All plans to return will follow CDC and the State of Michigan COVID-19 safety recommendations.
As you may know, Governor Whitmer has created the “Vacc to Normal” plan. This plan lays out how Michigan will progressively remove COVID-19 safety protocols based on the percentage of the population that is vaccinated for COVID-19. The steps of the Vacc to Normal plan are outlined below.
- 55% of Michiganders (4,453,304 residents), plus two weeks
- Allows in-person work for all sectors of business.
- 60% of Michiganders (4,858,150 residents), plus two weeks
- Increases indoor capacity at sports stadiums to 25%.
- Increases indoor capacity at conference centers/banquet halls/funeral homes to 25%.
- Increases capacity at exercise facilities and gyms to 50%.
- Lifts the curfew on restaurants and bars.
- 65% of Michiganders (5,262,996 residents), plus two weeks
- Lifts all indoor % capacity limits, requiring only social distancing between parties.
- Further relaxes limits on residential social gatherings.
- 70% of Michiganders (5,667,842 residents), plus two weeks
- Lifts the Gatherings and Face Masks Order such that MDHHS will no longer employ broad mitigation measures unless unanticipated circumstances arise, such as the spread of vaccine-resistant variants.
The PRT and the BC Executive Leadership Team continues to encourage everyone to get vaccinated if they are able and we support the Governor’s Vacc to Normal plan. Based on our summer 2021 course schedule and overall plans, BC will remain in Phase 2c for the summer semester. This means that only lab classes will be offered face-to-face, the campus will have limited access and all employees who have been working remotely will continue to work remotely until August 9, 2021.
The PRT and Human Resources Team will communicate with all colleagues prior to returning to on-campus operations as there is training and education that must be completed prior to returning to full campus operations.
Finally, the CDC and the Governor have announced that masks are not required outside or indoors for vaccinated individuals. At this time, MIOSHA regulations still require masks in the workplace. Hopefully these entities will align in the future, but for the time being anyone on campus indoors in a public space is required to wear a mask.
We hope that you have a safe summer and look forward to seeing you on campus this fall!
Sincerely,
BC Pandemic Response Team

Return to campus for the fall semester
Dear BakerProud,
We look forward to welcoming our faculty, staff, and students back to campus for the start of the fall semester on Monday, August 23. As COVID-19 vaccinations continue to progress in our state and local communities, we are cautiously optimistic about returning to relative normalcy for the fall semester. Your health and safety are our number one priority. Accordingly, we will continue to follow the most up-to-date guidance from the CDC regarding face coverings, social distancing, and handwashing to help prevent the spread of the virus on campus.
COVID-19 vaccination is a personal decision, and the College currently does not require anyone to receive a vaccine; however, certain programs (e.g., health science) may require vaccinations. We strongly encourage all faculty, staff, and students to get vaccinated when eligible. We believe this is in the best interest of everyone in our campus communities. To find vaccine sites in your county, go to the State of Michigan COVID-19 Vaccine website.
Housing will remain open to students this fall. The College has safely accommodated residence life students since the start of the pandemic and we will continue to adhere to best practices to ensure students receive a safe, enjoyable housing experience. Please view the academic calendar for a list of move-in dates and times for each campus.
The College will provide additional information about our return to campus as we move closer toward the start of the fall semester. We eagerly await the opportunity to come together again in person. Until then, let us all remain vigilant in doing our part to keep ourselves and others safe as this pandemic nears its end.
Sincerely,
Bart Daig, Ph.D.
System President

Reminders for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters
Dear BakerProud,
We hope you are in good health and staying safe as this pandemic continues. Your perseverance despite mental, physical, and emotional fatigue and other challenges is simply remarkable. It is because of your commitment that we’ve experienced a successful and productive Fall 2020 semester.
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday break, we want to remind you that all in-person classes will transition to virtual instruction after November 25. Classes that already meet virtually and online courses will continue as scheduled for the remainder of the Fall semester, which ends on December 13. We’re confident this approach will help ensure the health and safety of our Baker community.
The Spring 2021 semester begins the week of January 18. In observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, campus facilities will be closed on Monday, January 18, 2021. There will not be a spring break during the upcoming semester. The Spring semester ends on May 8. Please view the academic calendar for a complete list of dates for the Spring semester.
We greatly value the patience, flexibility, and cooperation you’ve shown throughout these unprecedented times. Even more outstanding is your diligence in keeping yourself and others safe. We hope you have a healthy and enjoyable Thanksgiving break.

Update regarding MI Supreme Court ruling
Dear BC Community,
The recent ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court regarding the Governor’s executive orders has raised questions about Baker College’s COVID-19 safety protocols. Throughout the pandemic, our utmost priority has been and continues to be the health, safety, and well-being of our campus community.
Each week the Pandemic Response Team (PRT) meets to discuss trends and practices to keep one another safe. Health experts and community leaders guide our decisions and subsequent safety procedures. As a result, the Supreme Court ruling has no bearing on our commitment to continue to follow the College’s safety protocols. The measures include wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and requiring health screenings before coming on campus. The COVID-19 webpage offers comprehensive resources and outlines processes, procedures, and practices backed by research.
Moreover, the College will stay the course and will follow the modified Spring semester schedule. The semester begins on January 18 and concludes on May 8. For additional information and important dates about the upcoming Spring semester, please refer to the academic calendar.
We each play a vital role in sustaining a healthy campus environment. We thank you for your ongoing commitment to keeping one another safe.
Sincerely,
Pandemic Response Team

Changes for the Upcoming Spring 2021 Semester
Dear BakerProud,
First and foremost, we hope you and your family are healthy and well. We appreciate your diligence to keep one another safe during these unprecedented times; your resilience and the way you care for one another is inspiring.
Given the continued uncertainty, and after much deliberation, we are altering various Spring semester dates. Please know that our students, faculty, and staff’s health, safety, and well-being is the barometer used to guide our decisions. As such, we are making the following changes to the Spring semester.
- The semester will begin during the week of January 18 and will conclude on May 8. Due to the condensed semester, Baker College will not observe Spring Break.
- The move-in date for Residence Halls is January 16 – 18.
- On-campus lecture-based courses will again be delivered virtually, at the regularly scheduled class time; however, certain classes, primarily lab courses, may require students to come to campus.
We are still making final adjustments to the Academic Calendar and will provide additional communication. For now, please review the following key dates for the upcoming semester.
- Spring semester registration begins on October 5.
- Classes begin the week of January 18.
- Martin Luther King Day, a regularly scheduled holiday, is January 18, no virtual or on-campus courses.
- The move-in date for Residence Hall is January 16-18.
- There will be no Spring Break on March 8 – 14
- The Spring semester concludes on May 8.
The protocol, policies, and procedures established for the Fall semester remain in place for the Spring semester. Our continued success, keeping one another safe, requires that we stay vigilant and follow safety measures to sustain our communities’ health, safety, and well-being.
The Pandemic Response Team will continue to provide updates, but additional information regarding the colleges’ response to COVID-19 is available at baker.edu/coronavirus.
BakerCares. Please stay safe and well.
Sincerely,

Update Regarding the Fall 2020 Semester
Baker College Community-
First and foremost, we hope you are healthy and staying safe during these unprecedented times. As we have been planning for the upcoming Fall semester, please know that our decisions are guided by the direction and recommendations of the Governor’s office, the CDC, and other health officials with the safety of our students, faculty, and staff as a priority. Baker College has identified a four-phased approach to reopening our campuses and will continue to operate in Phase II of our Return to Campus plan with some enhancements.
Specific to our instructional delivery plan, Baker College’s Fall semester will begin the week of August 24th with three instructional delivery methods:
- In-person courses offered at one of our campus locations. These will primarily be lab-based courses that utilize specific rooms and equipment on campus.
- Virtual courses that are delivered at the regularly scheduled class time. These will be most of the campus-based lecture courses.
- Traditional, online classes that are offered in eight week sessions.
The semester will end as scheduled on December 13th. However, the in-person classes will transition to virtual instruction after November 25th. Some lab courses will have adjusted meeting times to ensure we are able to utilize as much of the first 14-weeks of the semester as possible to meet the specific needs of the class. All online courses and virtual classes offered at scheduled class times will continue as normal for the full semester. Students will be notified of any changes to their class delivery based on their current schedule of registered classes.
Baker College is taking a multi-layered, phased approach to ensuring the health and safety of our Baker community in offering limited, in-person labs and classes on our campuses. We have been and will continue to follow state and local regulations and CDC and health official guidelines. These new safety protocols include the following:
- Education and training for all students, faculty and staff on COVID-19 health and safety procedures.
- Daily health screenings and temperature checks prior to entry into all Baker College campuses.
- Required face masks when inside Baker College buildings.
- Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols.
- Classrooms set up to ensure social distancing.
- New signage, improved building ventilation, plexiglass barriers, and hand sanitizer added throughout the campus.
- Contact tracing and communication protocols to address positive Covid-19 cases in our campus community.
Baker College and its outstanding students and employees have exhibited impressive agility, resilience, and strength as we have navigated this pandemic over the last five months. The quality of our nationally recognized Online College and the broad utilization of virtual instructional resources in all of our classes has positioned Baker College faculty and students for continued success. Baker College’s small class sizes will continue as we value the faculty-student interactions that occur in environments online, virtually, and in-person. Lastly, the College has invested in multiple resources to enhance our instructional and service capabilities to better serve our students.
Our success in keeping our entire Baker community safe and healthy requires everyone’s participation. We will be asking every staff, faculty, and student to do their part in taking care of themselves and contributing to the safety of everyone on campus. Please continue to monitor our COVID-19 webpage for additional information and updates.

Fall 2020 Semester Update
Dear Baker College Community,
I know you’re eager to learn about our plans for the fall semester given the current health crisis that has impacted our communities. First and foremost, we intend to be back on campus this fall to begin the academic year, as scheduled, on August 24, 2020. Over our 109-year history, we recognize that student interaction is a big part of the educational experience and we plan to support and curate safe spaces for our students and faculty to interact and develop connections, many long-lasting, when we return to campus.
As I have said repeatedly, the health, safety, and well-being of our Baker College community is our top priority. As such, I have commissioned a team that has prepared detailed plans to support the safe return to campus for in-person instruction. The team is comprised of college leaders operating under the guidance of public and private health officials. As part of our plan, measures are in place that address; social distancing, personal protective equipment (PPE), and contact tracing. We have modified our residence halls, classrooms, labs, and communal spaces as suggested by health officials.
Of course, there is no guarantee and it is difficult to predict what the future holds, but rest assured, we are prepared. We have adaptable plans with multiple contingencies that focus on safety while ensuring academic continuity.
We have learned many lessons over the past several months, and although the events are unprecedented, Baker College was able to respond quickly and provide our students with a safe environment to continue their studies. Given our rich history, agile faculty, and our students’ ability to persevere, I’m confident that we will continue to overcome challenges if they arise.
We look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Warm regards,
Bart Daig, Ph.D.

Pandemic Response Team Email
Dear Baker College Students, Faculty, and Staff,
Baker College has commissioned a Pandemic Response Team (PRT) to lead the effort of reopening the college for campus-based instruction. The PRT is responsible for establishing processes that ensure the college can safely welcome you back on campus in accordance with guidelines outlined by health officials, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and state and local governments.
As part of our response to the pandemic, we have adopted a motto, BakerCares, that acts as our beacon or guide on the road to returning to campus. Over the past several weeks, Baker College has involved experts to participate in planning a safe return to campus. As we have stated repeatedly, the health, safety, and well-being of Baker College students, faculty, and staff is our highest priority. As such, the Preparedness and Response Plan (PRP) that was developed relies on the most recent health and safety guidance available and outlines multiple phases. The PRP will continue to evolve, including the decision to progress to the next phase.
The underpinnings of the PRP is in preparation to welcome you back to campus. Again, the PRT will continue to rely on experts and the campus community, but Baker College intends to welcome all students back on campus for the fall semester, if not sooner.
Further details will be shared in the days and weeks ahead, but additional information regarding our planning process is available at baker.edu/coronavirus.
Once again, we admire the ways in which you’ve cared for one another. We encourage you to continue to take precautions, limit physical distance, and follow CDC guidelines.
Sincerely,
The Baker College Pandemic Response Team

Important Update Regarding the 2020 Baker College Commencement
Dear Graduating Class of 2020,
In response to the guidance provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Center for Disease Control, we’ve made a difficult but necessary decision to postpone the 2020 Commencement Ceremonies and all related events for the graduating Class of 2020. I share in your disappointment and understand that graduation is one of the highlights of your educational journey. COVID-19 | On-Campus Lab Closure – Academic Plan Update
Hello,
As a result of new guidance from the Center for Disease Control and the Michigan Department of Health, Baker College is suspending on-campus lab courses effective immediately. Below is an update on specific course delivery:
- 100% online courses are running smoothly with a successful Spring II start.
- Lecture-based on-ground courses have transitioned to the online format in a positive and productive manner.
- On-campus lab courses have been suspended.
- Clinicals are being handled on a situational basis. While many clinicals have discontinued accepting students, others have indicated they rely heavily on these students. In addition, some accrediting bodies have indicated flexibility in fulfilling clinical hours (allowing substitution with academic activity). The Dean has the recommendation from each accrediting body and can assist with providing direction. Program Directors are asked to record which students are continuing with their clinicals, which will pause on completing their hours, and how many hours have been completed. In almost all cases, clinicals courses will be extended past the published date.
It is important that students remain engaged in their lab course work, that material is reviewed and reinforced, and there is continued focus on learning outcomes. Faculty will continue to communicate and provide instruction via Canvas in every lab course. Faculty will continue to engage students with supplemental resources, such as videos, articles, diagrams, and asynchronous discussions. In addition, faculty will be provided a communication template outlining student expectations for their lab course.
It will be important for Directors of Academic Affairs and Program Directors to visit the virtual classrooms at the end of the week to ensure students are receiving the instruction they need, and faculty are receiving the support they need, to drive achievement of learning outcomes. The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) is available as a resource for all faculty and program directors to support them in this transition.
Thank you again for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Jill Langen, PhD
Provost

COVID-19: Social distancing strategies at Baker College
Dear Faculty and Staff,
To ensure the safety of our community, Baker College is moving quickly to promote and enable social distancing. On March 16, 2020, campuses will hold a meeting to discuss opportunities for faculty and staff to work remotely. The remote work arrangements will go into effect on March 17, 2020. The goal is to protect the health, safety, and well-being of our community while allowing core campus operations to continue.
We are all taking important steps to lower the probability of spreading COVID-19. We encourage you to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face, cough into your elbow or a kleenex, and stay at home if you are sick. Also, if you have traveled to a Level -2 or Level-3 country, you are required to notify Baker College and self-quarantine.
These are extraordinary times and we are counting on you to continue your diligent pursuit of fulfilling our mission, whether working on campus or remotely. It’s imperative that we continue to have an open dialogue, not only with your immediate supervisor but your Baker College colleagues as well.
We know many of you are directly involved in addressing this great challenge for our community. We are grateful for your dedication. Each of you is essential to Baker College’s mission. COVID-19: Academic Plan (Faculty Follow-up Email)
Dear Faculty,
Baker College appreciates your continued commitment to our students and their educational pursuits. As previously communicated, the College will be moving lecture courses to an online format beginning March 16th. Specific information regarding Baker College courses is provided below:
Online Courses: A significant number of courses offered by Baker College are delivered by our Online campus in a 100% virtual format. There will be no disruption to these courses and they will continue as scheduled.
On-ground Lecture/Didactic Courses: Courses scheduled as lecture-based courses will rely on a variety of virtual teaching strategies and tools to continue student learning. The College has long believed in utilizing a Learning Management System (Canvas) to support campus-based classes and is well prepared to leverage this tool. All courses have a Canvas component, and faculty are familiar with how to utilize the technology and teaching strategies. The courses will utilize the following resources as appropriate:
- Discussion Board: Faculty will use this tool to share content, engage in asynchronous dialogue, address questions, encourage student reflection, etc… and will be frequent and active participants on these boards.
- Group projects: Students can collaborate on assignments, projects, blogs, journals, simulations, etc…by meeting virtually.
- Synchronous virtual meetings: Faculty can utilize virtual meeting tools (Big Blue Button, Google Hangout, WebEx, FaceTime, Skype) to facilitate “live” discussion and lecture.
- Recorded lecture: Faculty can record lectures and provide to students via Canvas.
- Peer-to-Peer study groups: Students can participate in virtual meetings to review materials, study, and work together to enhance learning.
Lab Courses: All lab-based courses are limited in class size. Consequently, these courses will continue to be offered on campus.
Clinical/Student Teaching Courses: Clinical and student teaching courses will continue as normal and students are expected to attend unless otherwise directed. In a situation where site availability is closed, students will work with their instructor and/or program director to develop a plan for fulfilling the remaining program requirements. The plan will be submitted to the Provost. The College will defer to program accreditation requirements regarding clinical/student teaching requirements. This may include:
- Substituting clinical requirements with simulations where appropriate/approved
- Completing clinical requirements/student teaching when the site becomes available (may extend into the Summer semester or be completed in Spring semester with extended hours)
- Completing clinical requirements/student teaching at another site
Internships: Internship/externship courses will continue as normal and students are expected to attend unless otherwise directed. If an internship/externship opportunity discontinues, the student will work with their faculty member and, in collaboration with the Director of Career Services, develop a plan for continued education.
Running Start Courses Offered at Partner High Schools: Courses will continue as normal and students are expected to attend unless otherwise directed. If the high school closes, the student is expected to follow the direction and policy of the high school.
Regardless of the course format, faculty are expected to have a high-level engagement when facilitating the virtual course. Faculty will promptly answer student questions or concerns, and ensure that learning objectives are met.
Academic services will continue to be provided on-campus and virtually.
- Tutoring and Academic Support: On-campus or at https://baker.mywconline.com/
- Library Services: On-campus or at https://my.baker.edu/ICS/My_Services/Department_Resources/Academic_Resource_Center/Library/
- Disability Services: On-campus or at https://www.baker.edu/student-services/resources/disability-services
- Advising Services: On-campus or at https://my.baker.edu/ICS/My_Services/Student_Services_Center/OneStop/
To support faculty, multiple professional development opportunities will be available:

- A Canvas announcement template, which includes contact information and engagement expectations, will be sent to all faculty on Friday, March 13th. Faculty will complete the template and post in their courses by March 16th.
- Faculty Developers will email their campus faculty on Friday, March 13th an invitation/opportunity to schedule appointments for 1:1 consultation.
- A tab will be available at the CTE Resource Guide with targeted Canvas tutorials, recorded webinar content on planning, engagement strategies, etc.
- PD sessions on the topics below will be scheduled beginning Monday, March 16th. Additional PD sessions and topics will be added as needed. The PD schedule will be sent to faculty on Friday, March 13th. Leveraging Virtual Meeting Tools (Big Blue
- Button, Skype, FaceTime, Google HangOut, Existing WebEx)
- Creating Virtual Communities
- Virtual Group Projects
- Best Practices for Recorded Lectures

Important Update Regarding the Coronavirus Disease
Baker College Community,
With the Coronavirus (COVID-19) now confirmed in the United States comes speculation about the impact this virus may eventually have in Michigan and, more specifically, our local communities. Although there are no confirmed cases in Michigan and the overall risk in the state remains low, we do want everyone to be prepared and to understand the facts and preventative measures. The information and links below will provide you with the most accurate and timely information about this health concern.
- The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has published a Fact Sheet to explain what the virus is, how it is spread, who is at risk, and how to protect yourself from the virus. It explains that the risk of contracting the virus is low for the general public, however, travelers to and from certain regions, including Level-3 countries, of the world may be at increased risk.
- There is also a CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Frequently Asked Questions document that provides guidance and recommended strategies to guard against COVID-19.
- The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also has an up-to-date website, MDHHS COVID-19, which includes current case information in the State of Michigan.
According to public health officials, the way Coronavirus (COVID-19) is spread is very similar to the flu or common cold. For this reason, we are encouraging our students, faculty, and staff to:
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20-seconds especially, after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60-percent alcohol.
- Coughing into a tissue or your elbow instead of your hand will also prevent the spread of viruses.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Wearing masks, unless you are directed to by a health official, is not recommended.
- Stay home if you are sick and communicate with your instructor and academic advisor or supervisor if you are ill.
- If you have traveled to a Level-3 country, China, Italy, Iran, and South Korea, we ask that you stay home for a period of 14-days from the time you left an area with a widespread outbreak. Please communicate with your instructor, academic advisor, or supervisor if you have traveled to any destination with a widespread outbreak.
We have communicated with our local public health officials and we will alert students, faculty, and staff if we receive direction related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). While education is extremely important, the health and well-being of our students, staff, and community are far more significant.
With that in mind, we are preparing as a campus community to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff as we continue with the daily activities of teaching, scholarship, and service with as few interruptions as possible.
Sincerely,
Bart Daig, Ph.D.
