Math Camp: Wallet Wisdom
We aim to equip high school students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed financial decisions, manage money responsibly, and develop healthy financial habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. Our summer math camp will immerse high school students into the world of consumer math through fun, hands-on experiences. Summer camp participants explore the fun side of mathematics, engage in real-world scenarios, boost teamwork skills, form lasting friendships, and ignite a passion for mathematics!
Objectives
For a high school student, some key objectives in personal finance and consumer math include:
- Budgeting
- Learn how to create a budget and track income and expenses.
- Understand the importance of saving and setting financial goals.
- Develop strategies for managing money wisely.
- Banking:
- Learn about different types of bank accounts (checking, savings, etc.).
- Understand how to write checks, make deposits, and maintain a bank account.
- Learn about interest rates, fees, and other banking-related concepts.
- Credit and Debt:
- Understand the basics of credit scores and credit reports.
- Learn about the responsible use of credit cards and the dangers of excessive debt.
- Explore strategies for building and maintaining good credit.
- Investing and Saving:
- Understand the concepts of simple and compound interest.
- Explore different saving and investment options (e.g., savings accounts, stocks, bonds).
- Learn about the importance of long-term financial planning.
- Consumer Awareness:
- Develop skills to critically evaluate advertising claims and marketing strategies.
- Learn about consumer rights and responsibilities.
