Baker College is committed to addressing Michigan’s critical teacher shortage through its Elementary Education program, led by Dr. Robert Walker, Program Director for Elementary Education and Educational Leadership. Recognizing the urgent need for qualified educators, Baker College offers flexible pathways designed to prepare students for impactful teaching careers across the state.
“An effective teacher is someone who is innovative, resilient, and unafraid of new challenges,” said Dr. Walker. “These qualities are essential for teachers at any level, and they will be critical in addressing the shortage while creating exceptional educators.”
In addition to flexible pathways, Baker College’s Online Live Program extends access to aspiring teachers statewide. “Having been a superintendent in Northern Michigan, I know firsthand how challenging it is to find teacher preparation programs when the nearest option is more than 100 miles away,” Dr. Walker added. “Our program’s flexibility means potential teachers from metro Detroit to the Upper Peninsula now have access to quality teacher education without relocating.”
With a mission to build a stronger teacher pipeline, Baker College’s Elementary Education program offers two flexible pathways to teacher certification: a traditional 4-year pathway and a 2-year accelerated track which is tailored to individuals transitioning from a community college or those considering a return to education after a break, allowing more candidates to enter the classroom faster.
Baker College remains steadfast in its commitment to creating highly qualified, community-oriented educators who will lead and inspire Michigan’s students. Through its flexible and accessible education pathways, Baker College is taking a proactive stance in resolving the state’s teacher shortage.
