Baker College announces Dr. Robert Walker as Program Director for the Elementary Education and Educational Leadership programs. Dr. Walker brings a wealth of experience from across Michigan’s K-12 landscape, having served as a superintendent, principal, athletic director, and teacher. Now, Dr. Walker is set to bring his in-depth understanding and vision to Baker College’s education programs.
In his new role, Dr. Walker is dedicated to fostering a community-centered approach to teaching, preparing future educators to make a meaningful impact within and beyond the classroom. “One of the things I always said as a K-12 administrator is that a school’s role goes beyond its own four walls,” Walker said. “If a school is not actively participating in its community, it’s living in the past. At Baker College, we instill a community-centered philosophy in our students, preparing them to not only teach but also to engage and impact their communities.”
Looking to build a vibrant teacher pipeline, Walker is also calling upon Baker College alumni to be ambassadors for the programs. “Our alumni are a vital link to future educators,” he says. “We want them to spread the word about our elementary education program, and we’d love to hear from them if they’re interested in teaching or supporting current students.” Baker’s flexible programs offer two pathways to teacher certification: a traditional 4-year pathway and a 2-year accelerated track tailored to individuals transitioning from a community college or those considering a return to education after a break, allowing more candidates to enter the classroom faster.
With Dr. Walker’s leadership, the Elementary Education and Educational Leadership programs are poised to shape the next generation of educators who are community-focused, well-prepared, and ready to address teaching needs in Michigan and beyond.
