Baker College faculty member, Justin Hooks, has been elected by members of the Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners (MICNP) to serve a two-year term as Chair of the Education Committee. With a term commencing January 2025, this move highlights his exceptional commitment to advancing nurse practitioner education across the state.
“Being elected as Chair of the Education Committee is an incredible honor. This opportunity allows me to showcase Baker College’s commitment to nursing excellence and ensures our institution plays an active role in shaping the future of nurse leaders across the state.”
Hooks was also a keynote speaker at the 2024 MICNP Annual Conference, where he presented on LGBTQIA+ healthcare. His session, which evolved into a keynote address due to its significance, emphasized inclusive healthcare practices, addressing disparities, and advocating for LGBTQIA+ patients. Hooks’ deeply personal experiences fueled his passion for creating equitable healthcare environments and have led to invitations to speak at additional conferences in 2025.
Adding to his list of accomplishments, Hooks received the prestigious MICNP 2024 Student Scholarship in recognition of his academic achievements and leadership in the nursing profession. This scholarship supports his pursuit of a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) and reflects his commitment to advancing patient care through education and advocacy.
Hooks has also been published in the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM), contributing an article on Primary Care and Transgender and Gender-Diverse Patients, further demonstrating his dedication to advancing knowledge and improving care within the nursing community, and serving as a role model for others in the field.
Beginning his career with Baker College in 2008 as EMS faculty at the Clinton Township campus, he transitioned to science faculty in 2010. After pursuing graduate studies, Hooks reconnected with Baker in 2023, resuming his role teaching science courses online and serving on several committees, including AI, First-Generation, and Alumni Ambassadors.
“As a first-generation college graduate, my dedication to Baker College is deeply personal. Baker was where I earned my first degree, graduating with a 4.0 GPA, and the college has been a constant source of support throughout my journey. I am incredibly humbled by the many opportunities Baker has provided me, and I couldn’t be prouder of what I have achieved in my career, all thanks to the continued encouragement from the faculty and staff at Baker.”
The Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners (MICNP) advances healthcare in Michigan through education, advocacy, and member engagement.
